I was thinking of trying to get a 2-3 gallon fuel cell molded to fit in my upper case then plumb it into my fuel line with a quick disconnect It would be vented to allow fuel flow and removable Any thoughts..hate seeing that yellow light in the mountains.tks

The ONLY thing I don't like about my Uly! I've seen the tourtank, but, have never really seen a way to plumb it in. Ideally, I'd like to be able to fill it up with the regular tank, and, not have to think about it until I need to fill up.

You don't want to splice into the fuel line. This can be done on a carb set up, but not on a FI engine.
Here's want I did: Plumbing from fuel drain plug---quick-disconnect-----petcock----inline fuel filter----tourtank. You wind up filling the stock frame from the bottom up.
I mounted the tank on the top case rack, system is gravity fed. I've done multiple IronButt events with this setup and it works perfectly.

Come to think about it, the set up is for sale. I brought a Honda ST1300 for LD riding and this 5 gal fuel cell plus the stock 7.7 gal puts me over the IB limits.

Set up includes: 5 gal tourtank w/internal baffle (prevents sloshing), cover, support hardware for mounting, in line fuel filter, 5/16 fuel line, on/off petcock switch, quick disconnects, drain plug adapter w/hose barb.

New this over $400. I'll sell it w/shipping for $225

I have the same setup as Bob, and can attest to it working well..



Fuel light comes on, reach down turn on petcock, 20 minutes later, tank is full again

What is involved with removal and re-installation? It would be something I would like to put on for the occasional long weekend, but not want to leave on.

With quick disconnects, I could have the tank off within 15 minutes. 4 u-bolts held the tank to the top case luggage rack. Undo the bolts, snap the disconnect, cut a couple of zip ties and it's off. Simple stuff.

if for some reason Woodreaux doesn't buy it I would definately buy it. IBA rides suck with that stock tank.

I assume that's true when "refilling" frame from tourtank? You still fill the frame as normal. Correct? Are all the parts available from tourtank.com?

Jim,
Yes, you fill the stock frame as normal. You switch on the fuell cell when the frame is nearly empty. The tourtank fills from the bottom up. If you switch on the tourtank before there is room in the frame, the extra gas runs out the stock overflow vent. I did that a couple of times and created a nice puddle of gas at a stoplight. Luckily nobody threw a cigarette butt my way.

All parts, except for the new drain plug adapter are available from tourtank. I took the stock drain plug to an automotive store and had them match the thread pattern on a 90 degree hose barb. ( I think thats what it called.)

This is likely going to be a winter project for me. I have my 3.5 gallon tourtank from my old bike. I just need to mount it and plumb it.

Bob - did you keep the hose barb and disconnect on the bike when you removed the tank, or did you just put the stock drain plug back in when you weren't using it?

That seems like a really cool setup.
I personally use the mediocre range as a chance to rest up on a long trip.
I usually use the fan as a guideline of when my breaktime is over : )

Chris - I left the hose barb and female portion of disconnect on, when I had the Fuel cell off. I just tucked it away and zip tied it. The other way requires you to remove barb, which means you have to drain all the fuel out of the frame before installing the stock drain plug. Then when you want to use the cell, you have to go though the same process of draining the frame to install hose barb. PITA
