I can't seem to get the search function to work on this site.

Has anyone installed lights in the red bar across the back of the OEM trunk?

I've got plans, lots of plans... just wanted to see if anyone has done it already.

I installed a 6" strip of red LEDs in mine, they were about $5, and are bright as hell.

Seems we are spending all our time that we are not riding the Uly admiring it in the driveway, making plans, and researching potential projects on Badweb. Oh, and placing late nite orders from American Sport Bike.

Yesterday we talked about installing topcase LED's, and debating how to do it. Please share details of this project, post pics if ya got 'em.

Thanks a bunch! B.

There was a thread a year ago. I need to start saving those to favorites because it is a mod I want to do. Other riders always ask why that doesn't light up.

I ordered some strips and two pods from oznium.com

Will be using the strips behind the center, thinner portion of the top case reflector, and the pods on each side behind the larger areas. Will be wiring the strips as a tail/brake light and the pods as turn signals.

Looks like I'll be waiting 3 weeks though as the natural white LED strips are on backorder. I had my doubts about cool white or warm white looking the same through the red reflector.

These work well for me on my H-D Ultra's trunk and top-loading side cases. You can purchase just the trunk light (if you aren't interested in lighting your side cases) and it should be adaptable to the Buell trunk.

http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_product.jsp ?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524448767293&default=none

They're kind of expensive, but I like the built-in on/off switch and 5 minute auto shut-off.
I've had them on for 2 years and the Pacific Northwest climate hasn't been able to kill them.

I put a led light strip in mine when that thread was active last year. If you are at the plant on the 26th I'll show you. My complaint is that I used the red lights and should have used the brighter lights. My wife said she couldn't see them till she was up on me at a light.

I didn't put any LEDs in the reflector on my stock case, I just put one of those BackOff license plate frame LED strips on the bottom, by the bracket-latch.

On my new H-B Journey 50L top, though, I did put LEDs in the reflector, wired as brake-only (no running light). I used the guts from our Magnum R/T's third brakelight (yes...the car was *already* totalled, I'm not just taking the wife's car apart at random LOL) - basically six LEDs on a circuit board, nice and thin. It's powered by a heated clothing connector attached to the rack so when I take the case off I just unplug it, and has a flasher on it via a flasher box designed for police LED lights (28 patterns!), mounted in the rear mudguard below the seat key cylinder. I'll shoot some pics when I'm home from the Last Ride later in the week.

I bought 2 - 12 inch led strips for around $20. One is wired to be on all the time. The other is wired in sync with the brake light ( which is fitted with a "back off" brake flasher so it blinks 5 times fast then stays on for a few seconds then repeats as long as the brake lever is engaged). I'm out of town right now but I can take some photos when i get back

I wanted a quick way to disconnect the trunk case wiring from the bike when removing the case, so I picked up one of these:

The socket will be installed in the bottom of the trunk case, and the plug will be run out from under the seat whenever I'm using it.

I'll only need 5 wires, so thinking about running a fused hot wire straight from the battery on the 6th plug, and using it for a switched light inside the trunk.

Still waiting on LED's to arrive before I start installing anything.

I was just going to use a flat trailer connector like this:

But I only need the 3 wire, since I'm just powering a running light and brake light.

How large is that connector you posted? And where'd you pick it up from?

PK:

Where'd you get that plug?

I am hard wired now but that plug would be nice. I'm running a Whelan TIR3 for the brake light on the rear of my top box and am going to install a white TIR3 for interior lighting.

Got the plug from Wal-Mart of all places.

The tip of the plug is the size of a quarter. There looks to be just enough space to mount the socket on the front bottom corner of the trunk case, outboard of the mounting bracket.

Mike - I looked at flat connectors like you show, but couldn't find one with a cap over the socket to keep the elements out when not in use. Many of the round style sockets have a spring loaded cap.

I couldn't find any wire bundles with 5 or 6 wires, but instead got a 4 wire bundle which is normally used for trailer wiring - brn/ylw/grn/wht used for tail/left/right/grnd. I'll wrap the length of wire between the seat and the trunk case with heat shrink anyway, so a few separate wires inside won't hurt anything.

When I try the above link for the thin led strip from Oznium it says the product is no longer available. Which did you get?

I bit the bullet and ordered my electrical stuff today. BIG things are going down!

Lets just say there are more than 13 electrical components in the mail with my name on them as we speak!

SO EXCITED!

How's that for a teaser?

Mine (linked in Ourdee's post) are still working fine, having been through plenty of rain and stuff, and the topcase is still waterproof (luckily for my laptop). I think it makes a difference, and when my wife drove her car behind me one time she said it's more noticeable. I ride to work about 0530 so it's dark out, and I need all the visibility I can get.

One of my orders is coming in tomorrow. The rest should be next week.

I'm busy as hell for the next two weeks so I probably won't get anything done until after that.

Court, it looks to be a standard round 6-pole trailer connector. It should make for a nice clean look while still being designed for exposure to the elements. If you don't need all the connectivity, you should also be able to find a 4-pole connector that is a little smaller than that.
