My XT quickly developed a hesitation when accelerating from idle, almost like running WAY to lean, I'd have to rev it up and slip the clutch. It didn't do this in the beginning, but it developed it over the course of a couple hundred miles. Thanks to this site and a little searching I found the TPS electronic reset method as well as the ECM reset via sustained RPM's around 3000-3500 for 10 min or so. Just doing the TPS reset via: - Key in off - Kill switch in run - Key on - Closed throttle to WOT, hold for 1 sec - WOT to closed, hold for 1 sec - Repeat three times, then key off then on That made an instant difference, idle shot up and power from idle was ON. After I did the ECM reset, EVERYTHING smoothed out, under 3k power increased, takeoff from idle had 0 hesitation and overall I seemed to have more response and power. THANK YOU for the resource! Adding this for posterity and searches |

The TPS should adjust on its own over time, the steps above are for the rare cases where for some reason it becomes out of sync with with the ECM. Glad to hear it got you sorted. |

I'm having that off the line stumbling problem on my new bike. Did you do the 10 mins at 3000 rpm on the road or in the driveway? Thanks Much! |

The bike will constantly adjust the AFV while you are cruising, people recommend the 10 minute trick to give the ECM sufficient time to make its adjustments. The bike should adjust on its own fine with normal riding. You could do it in your driveway, but its not recommended. |

Picky question -- "repeat three times" meaning four times total, or just three times total on the "open/close throttle" part? |

Just three times total: On/Off/On/Off/On/Off. I did this about a month or so ago to cure an occasional faltering idle. Worked like a charm. |

Sorry that probably wasn't real clear, three times total in the WOT (wide open throttle) position |

..."The TPS should adjust on its own over time, the steps above are for the rare cases where for some reason it becomes out of sync with with the ECM. Glad to hear it got you sorted. ..." So is it unwise to perform the steps above under normal circumstances just for the hell of it? If so, why? |

The TPS on the 08+ bikes will automatically reset itself. This just forces a reset should you need it. Doesn't matter, the inferior FI system of the 07 and older models can't do it and require manual resetting. |

So is it unwise to perform the steps above under normal circumstances just for the hell of it? If so, why? it's not rare that the calibration get's off a little we tell our customers to reset it before every ride, the 08 and up FI is more developed as the older models, and a very little change in the tps calibration can make a bike perform badly, because it will run in a other mapping cell that the throttle opening would need |

Will this process work on my '06? |

This doesn't work on 2007 and earlier bikes. The 2008 and up have completely different injection systems with the timing taken directly off of the crank and computer-controlled idle servos. on the newer ones, the human has control over the throttle and the butterfly closes all the way shut. There is a second smaller air bypass that is controlled by the computer to allow the engine to idle. |

Side question, I did read somewhere about doing a "solid 0" reset on the TPS by loosening the bolts and shifting it until you feel pressure from the TB arm because the plastic TPS rounds out a little bit. Is this worth the effort? |

Performed this reset on my '08 XB12XT this morning before trekking an hour north on the interstate to the dealer (to pull the trigger on an '09 1125CR for $6,000 OTD!). Very noticeable improvement. I also had the latest fuel map uploaded, and now it's a whole new machine. I'm very satisfied. |

So how do you do the ECM reset? |

Unrealtrip, that was Treadmarks on an 06. I would not do it on a 08+ bike. |

http://badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142838/ 274886 http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/502274 Some links regarding a TPS reset for 2007 and 2006 bikes. Can the dealers tell if you used ECM spy to do a reset? Would it void the warranty? |

There is no way for them to know what program did the TPS reset, its not like it leaves a fingerprint or something. Using ECMspy to TPS reset will not void your warranty. Obviously if you botch it and can't figure out how to do it right and the dealer has to come to the rescue, expect to pay. |

I suppose I should have known that.. not sure why I envisioned a ECM forensic specialist at the dealer looking over previous updates and tweaks done to the bike... hehehe. thanks This snowy weather has me day dreaming to much, I might have to move down south so I can ride my Uly more. |

Thanks Unrealtrip. Tried this on my '09XT which has suffered cold starts and lean conditions. Bike is in the rafters right now (slung) but tried it before I hauled it up. WoW. Idle shot right up to 1300-1400 with a rich mixture (smell) and hunted back down for idle. Will have to wait til next spring to test the throttle response. (which I have found to be lean (whiffy) in the low end i.e. below 3500rpm. -p |

Unrealtrip, thanks for the tip, really improve my 08 Uly handling at low RPMs. |

Pauley, Take that ULY out for a rip in the snow. If you get stuck, I'm sure you can get a tow from the first moose that comes along. http://maps.google.com/maps?rlz=1C1CHMI_enUS291US3 03&sourceid=chrome&q=torbay+newfoundland&um=1&ie=U TF-8&hq=&hnear=Torbay,+NL,+Canada&gl=us&ei=oUbwStC rG5KqNpr00ZAH&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=title&resn um=1&ved=0CAsQ8gEwAA Newfoundland looks like one neat place to visit...someday. I'll have to ride the ULY on Indian Meal Line. |

Indian Meal Line if you wanna snooze. The twisty roads here don't even begin to register on the maps. Nor the rapid up and down elevation changes. The ULY is my personal rollercoaster here abouts. If you are looking to do the ride here +/- the TLH (trans Labrador hwy)you're welcome and I'll spin out with you. Check these guys out for help, tips etc. http://www.ridetherock.com/forums/cmps_index.php Very nice group of riders. As for snow. I'll ride my 250KLX in the winter. -p |
