Well I had a revelation yesterday. I bought a steeply discounted 1125CR and had to ride it home ~100 miles last night. I was amazed at how much less wind noise I had in my helmet than on my Ulysses. I have the standard windshield on my Uly with a Laminar Lip attachment. Up until yesterday, I had just thought it was a noisy helmet (I always wear ear plugs BTW) but that's obviously not the problem. My windshield combo does a great job of keeping the windblast off my chest and there's no buffeting around the helmet, but it must be making turbulent air there to make the noise. I'm about 5'9", but I'm all body with short legs. Figure my head height above the seat is about the same as the average 6 footer. Anybody got a recommendation for a quieter windshield? I figure if I want a Buell tall shield I better order now. Thanks in advance... | ||

I am about 5'10" with more legs than torso, and have just bought an XT. I find the XT windshield noisier than the X based on some X test rides I took. I rode my new bike 150 miles Saturday with significant wind noise. I'm not sure what I'm going to do, but I doubt you'll find the XT shield quieter. | ||

The XT shield on my Uly XT was quite loud for me... that's why I went with the Madstad brackets to raise it up a bit - much less noise, and I'm still able to see over it. If it wasn't for the brackets, I wouldn't be able to ride with the XT shield at all... | ||

I ride an XT and have just ordered an X screen. Of all the screen combos I've tried (including with brackets) it's the best I've found for noise / buffeting. Shame about the reduction in wind protection, but I'm consoling myself by having ordered one of the new tinted screens which will look groovy on my black XT.  | ||

Guys...either you get your head up in the clean windstream for a smooth ride...or bury it behind a big screen. If you get your helmet/head into the wind tumbling over the top of whatever screen you have...noisy and jerky. Each body type (inseam) has to find either the clean wind height screen or a big enough one to hide behind (and sloped right) to have a smooth experience. Note also the wind coming up around your airbox...that can jerk you around too... Watch out for this guy liking this or that screen...you are not built like him. | ||

Everyone will have their own preferences with regard to screens. I had the original X screen which is good from a noise standpoint. I switched to the tall Buell screen or XT screen and that provided more protection but more noise. Not unbearable, but definitely noisier. (I also wear earplugs) I then bought the Palmer adjustable brackets and played with them using the XT screen. Most of the higher settings were better from a protection standpoint but worse, some a lot worse, from a noise and especially buffeting standpoint. Best setting for me (6'1" tall 31" inseam) was the highest of the 3 vertical settings with the least possible rake (angle). This produced NO buffeting and pretty good protection. I will likely use this for summer riding. I now bought the large Palmer screen and have been playing with it for a couple of weeks. Its is shaped just like the XT screen but several inches larger in both directions. BEAUTIFUL!! There are several positions that work nicely, and some that don't, but all I need is one that does. The key I think to everyones noise and buffeting issues is the ability to adjust the height and angle. On any of the fixed position screens, you are stuck with one position. It will either work or not. With the Palmer (or the Madstad), you can adjust till you find the best position for you. Spend the money, its worth it. | ||

Cool Hugh-you bought a CR. I leaning towards an 1125R or 12R. I use the tall Buell shield but I put a bumper on the top of the flyscreen so the shield doesn't fold down at speed and I shortened the spacers on the lower mounts so it tilts forward more-not bad now. | ||

Longer screws on the fly screen and fuel hose spacers to change angles (or a Palmer/Madstad bracket) might work. Won't do heights but would rake. Moving the screen away could bring tumbling air into your helmet...holes (like under the Palmer bracket) in the screen can bring in air to offset negative atmosphere behind the screen which increases with speed. | ||

Also...Hughlysses is bent over more on the 1125 and closer to the screen...less turbulence too. Right Hugh? | ||

My CR has the higher handlebars. My head is definitely farther away from the fairing than it is from the screen on the Uly. The adjustable brackets seem like they have the best chance of improving things. | ||

  The Buell tall windshield took the wind off my neck and wind pressure off my helmet but it folds down at speed and flaps around.I put a bumper off of a bug shield in the middle and cut it down some and put dense foam between the flyscreen and fairing thing then I put bolts with spacers in all four w/s mounts.Shortening the spacers on the lower w/s mount bolts tilts the w/s forward and holds it solid. I already blew my m/c budget this year so I had to do something for no money and it is much better.  Oh BTW those bolts are the ones that come with the tall w/s and they have a sleeve that I cut down.I plan to cut the lower ones down more to make the w/s stand more straight up.
