Read the press releases, listen to the video.

HD has pledged parts and warranty support for the next 10 years.

Our dealership, and I suspect many others, have already signed up for the program; we will remain a Buell Service Center.

If you want to 'stockpile'...feel free, but the panic is unwarranted.

Dealer I went to yesterday (where I made a BIG purchase- Thunder Tower HD/Buell near Columbia, SC) had all Buell gear for half price, and they had a very good selection. I'll bet others will be offering similar discounts.

Our new gear order is still in transit.

Initially they had cancelled it...but I've talked them into un-cancelling it and it should hopefully be here soon.

We have some stuff left from prior seasons, too. Couple adventure jackets, a couple of the Turbulent jackets, and one of the '09 mesh (Joe Rocket) jackets.

We had five of the new Bolt jacket in gray...but they all went this weekend.

Unfortunately zero gloves at the moment.

No idea what's on the incoming order though.

Being a new guy to Buell and just loving my 09X I would like to put a kit together to maintain the bike. Already did the dealer 1K visit. I have the comfort kit to install. I don't trust Harley to survive in a way that honors the parts laws. So if we could work up a Buell X survival kit I will order it. My thoughts are a drive belt stored in airless package to preserve rubber first...

So drive belt (add your thoughts)
chain for trans drive?
2 clutch and brake levers
clutch cable
oil filters per 5K miles
which gaskets/orings?
brake pads
spark plugs
Any electrical like ECM?
service, electrical and parts manual

Please add to the list those things unique to our bikes and would be an issue if we could not get them. I think we should make an order soon...put the pressure on the system to generate them. Thanks

So drive belt (add your thoughts) - You should have one on hand already
chain for trans drive? - I have only heard of one XB chain getting worn out over all the years, wasn't even a Uly!
2 clutch and brake levers - Make that like 4 knowing my luck
clutch cable - There are after market ones worst comes to wost, but I would just spend the $40 to have one on the shelf, and keep your current one lubed nice
oil filters per 5K miles - There is a long list of after market filters that fit
which gaskets/orings? O-rings are no worry, only gasket I can see worth having would be the clutch window.
brake pads - Plenty of superior after market pads
spark plugs - Again after market is good
Any electrical like ECM? - If the ECM broke you would be screwed regardless, ebay time!
service, electrical and parts manual - You don't have one yet? : D

The wear items are of no real concern due to after market availability. Really, only the belt is my long term concern.

10 years, folks.

People are freaking. Get over it. I ride a 15 year old S2 and have no problems getting parts.

Miffed as I am right now...if HD says they're standing behind parts, service, and warranty...I believe it.

We've already signed the papers, making our dealer one of the Service Centers. We can't do service unless they're going to send us parts.

Rat, my concern is Harley taking a dump a year or two down the road. As long as Harley is alive I am not worried about parts.

Thanks Froggy. Rat...I know the value of faith and live it...but I know biznis and the free market...and believe and invest $ in it...and it has been good. BUT...I see the signs. A clueless prez regarding free-market, declining morality, more intrusive incentive destroying govt with no idea how to make an economy go...there is a window of time that has to go right for HD to recover. If HD misses the window and legally bankrupts...not held to parts support. THEN the free market (whatever is operating in a commie environment...China?) will meet demand. Our bikes are so cool they WILL demand parts of the free market. Me...I just hate hunting down stuff...bike waiting because some little piece of something is being fabbed at my local shop. Like to get American stuff too. So...hedging a bet here...no real panic. I actually think Buell will rise from the corporate decision ashes in 2010...if the economy can bear it. I mean...food before riding usually. Not always...but usually

Froggy/Rat...see anything else on the list? I would like to support either a dealer or one of the BWB advertisers with my order.

Honestly I couldn't think of anything else. Stuff like bearings, brake lines, gaskets and junk can all be had after market.

Nobody's mentioned stators and voltage regulators. It may be possible to adapt Sportster parts if it comes to that.

I'm doing a 2010 rear wheel upgrade. If you want to ride your Uly forever, that might be a good investment.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. After ~9 years are they going to get to the point of not warehousing the big items (frames, engine cases, wheels, etc.), and only ordering it from the manufacturer on an as-needed basis? Or are they going to have a warehouse full of parts at the end of 10 years which hopefully someone like Al Lighton can buy and set up "NOS Buell Parts, Inc."?

Related story- I've heard that Soichiro Honda stated that he would always produce replacement parts for any vehicle he ever sold. Up until his death a few years ago, evidently that was true. You could get ANY part for any Honda bike ever made. Supposedly shortly after his death management rescinded this policy and it's getting harder to get parts for older Hondas, especially less-popular models like my Ascot. Who knows, maybe Erik's new company will take up the torch when HD throws it down.

10 years really isn't a long time for someone who truly loves his bike. I am not too concerned about it, though. There are enough high performance aftermarket parts for the sportsters that you will always be able to keep the engine going (piston kits, valve trains, etc.). (I assume much of that can be made to work with the Buells). Voltage regulators can be retrofitted from a number of other bikes out there. Chain conversions will do if belts disappear. Creativity and ingenuity should take care of the rest.

The real bummer is that factory parts will eventually go up significantly in price during the 10 year period. Hats off to the powers that be if that doesn't happen, but I have seen it before in other industries.
