I hate cold damp weather. This seems to be a cold damp news day also. Given those conditions, it seems to me that it is time to reinstall the Original Big Assed Windshield. This will be the fourth season for this wonderful weather beating mo^&*)fu@#*&^ device. I hate to have to use it. But I cannot stop winter. I was quite pleased with its fit last year. When it started out it was too damn big(but I knew that). The next season I cut a significant bit of it off, trimmed another inch the next year and last year another inch. I believe I will leave it alone this year, but I may add deflector wings at the bottom edges to reduce the amount of air that comes up the leading edge of the fuel tank/frame. The air that does come up there works well for keeping the windshield, my face shield, and glasses fog free. It is not a direct cold blast, more a circulating wind that has no affect on buffeting or directly blowing on me. Those will be the balance factors. I know if it stops too much air flow, fogging will occur. I would like to stop a little more to help stay warmer. This is it at rest. I will post some pictures later of the install and finish. I may not get it done until the weekend.

Wow, I thought my CalSci was a big screen! Yeah, cold sucks, but the full-on CHiPs screens make a HUGE difference if you wanna' keep riding through the winter... |

Starting with the stock windshield, I remove it and the rubber grommets.
I mount my BAW to the instrument housing behind the fly screen starting with two 1/4" stainless screws near the center in drilled holes.
Next I bend the plexiglass back to install the screws in the brackets on the top handguard mounts.
Then install the fly screen with the stock screws. I have modified the holes slightly by slotting them towards the outside edge to make up for the 3/16 thickness of the windshield, making sure to start them at the proper angle so they don't cross thread.
I finish it with four self adhesive furniture pad feet to cap the holes. Then I go out riding in cold nasty weather, laughing inside at people who do not have one! |
