Is there a general consensus on how accurate our speedometers are? | ||

A few mph high at highway speeds. 3000RPM = 60mph, 4000rpm = 80. Nothing out of the ordinary. (Message edited by froggy on October 10, 2009) | ||

My '08 is consistently 3 to 4 mph higher than GPS readings. Stopwatching a 10 mile check shows the GPS to be pretty darned accurate. Mark SE AZ | ||

My '06 is right at about 5% over, which would make sense since 5% accuracy is the manufacturer's target (always on the high side). I think I recall other BWB'ers claiming that a simple reflash caused their speedometers to become more optimistic. Also, I think 4,000 RPM = 80 mph, since around 3,600 rpm on my '06 gets me an indicated 75 mph or so (about 5% high). I'm pretty sure that's right.  | ||

When I bought my '08 the speedo and the GPS were dead on. The first reflash resulted in an error of about 2 mph per 50 mph. The fan reflash has not changed that error. | ||

I was riding with other folks this week and at gas stops all the odometers were reading different mileage so I checked mine against the mile markers and after 5 miles mine was still right on. I have the XB9 primary which shows 4000 rpm is 75 mph. Mine is an 06 and has never been flashed by the dealer. Before the primary swap it read 3400 at 70 mph. I thought that was right on. | ||

Simple math really. IF indeed 3000 rpm = 60 mph, the 4000 rpm must equal 80 mph. Speedometers were designer with the bench racers in mind. i.e. My Hyabusaki 1700 will go 200 mph!!! Before doing anything to correct the speedometer check the odometer accuracy, as that is ultimately more important, to me anyway, for gas mileage etc. Most bikes I have owned have optimistic speedos and pessimistic odos. If you correct one, the other gets worse. | ||

I used a gear ratio calculator, using a stock XB12 at 80mph in 5th it would be 3963rpm. Actual speed will vary based on your tire wear and such, and it is almost impossible to see a 37rpm change on an analog speedo, so 4000rpm is good enough for me | ||

I was not trying to hyper technical of the exact rpm, just correcting the math on the second post on this thread. That's all. "3000RPM = 60mph, 4000rpm = 70." You see what I mean? | ||
