The past couple of times I started the Uly, when I hit the starter button there's a slight pause and then it fires up. Yesterday, I was riding along and suddenly the engine light goes on..then off....then it felt like it skipped..this happened several times, to the point where I was concerned that I might get stranded (I did not). Based on what I've read here and advrider, I'm guessing that this is a short of some sort, and possibly related to the battery ground (easy to check) or the fuel pump wiring (much more difficult). With the information provided, can anyone guide me to other areas of investigation?

Appreciate your collective wisdom.

Wiggle the grounds first.

That seems to be the most common issue in these things.
Something is loose under your seat I'll bet.

First check the battery cables, they may look tight, but if you can turn them at all by grabbing them and putting some effort into it, they are too loose. Then the grounds. And from there there is a progressive list. Also get a voltage test done on the battery, if you have an '07 with the original battery it may be time.....I replaced my'06's battery this time last year.

Mine did the same thing (except for the starter hesitation) and it ended up being a broken kill switch wire in the vicinity of the steering head harness bracket. It is also possible that you have two separate issues going on at the same time...so look at everything.

I had my bike in the shop for over one week diagnosing a wire problem. Mine was the cable running off the ECM rubbed on the frame and shorted.

Symptoms:

1) Would not start when on the side stand.
2) Check Engine was flashing all sorts of codes.
3) Engine would buck once in a while.

MY solution will be this winter to go through the entire bike and protect, reroute, and shield all the wires.

IT seems that wiring was an afterthought.

With a similar "skipping" problem on my '06 Uly I brought it into the shop. 9 weeks later they discovered the voltage regulator was putting out voltage spikes that were causing the ecm to momentarily shut down. They only discovered this with a data log during a test ride.

Well, the ground is solid, I torqued down the battery cables, and went for a ride. About 75 miles into it, same thing, it bucked, the engine light went on briefly, then went out. Died on a left hand turn into my subdivision. In the last two rides, these symptoms appeared only after the bike got good and warm, after 70-80 miles. Does that ring a bell with anyone before I start to trace every wire? (I haven't yet checked the battery, that's on my 'do tonight' list.)

On the old Ecm the battery needed adequate current for it to operate properly, I had the same problems, with the same fear of being stranded on my '03' changed the battery and it all went away.

If it died on a left hand turn I would suspect a broken wire. Pull the connector off the ecm and make sure all the prongs are sticking out. If good then check the wiring going into the connector making sure there are none rubbed through or near breaking. Pull the air cleaner box off and check the connector to the coil and it's wiring. Check the plug wires, they can rub the frame and short out over time. Since your dealer has had it apart I would look at anything they might have touched. I know you went through a lot recently so anything could be suspect.

I am having a similar issue. I had another thread about it but it went into the archives, because there related I'll add to this thread.

Had the same skip-light issue on a long trip, did it 4 times. With some help from the badwebers I moved the ECM spacer to the back and the issue went away for a few weeks, until BTFIII weekend. Friday I had the check engine light come on and stay on for about 20min but went out as I was pulling into a gas station but before I stopped. Next day skip-light and the gagues reset - halfway. stuck at 60mph and 4k for about 5 min while riding but the trip odomiter keep working. Now when I start the bike the light is on for a few sec after startup and goes out.

This weekend I cleaned the main ground connection. pulled it off. sanded all the surfaces, put a star washer on the frame side and a spacer washer on the batt side( both ) and checked the code with a jumper-wire .. agg code 53 ( bad ECM )

Question .. could a bad ground, a short or a bad batt. cause that code ?

06 Batt that I took to autozone and it tested good but .. It's the stock 06 batt .. replace it anyhow ?

Could a short somewhere cause the issue and the code ?
