Just back from dealer and a fast ride out of town...seems like my 09 X does not dig as deep in grunt like it did before the ECM update for the comfort kit. I have not put the kit on yet but grabbed the update (which they said is a generic update for all the 08 and 09's). Seems smoother (no synthetic yet...waiting for 3K for that) and still plenty fast but...less grunt. Fan not on as much either. You guys have any input on your experiences? Thanks.

Odd that you mentioned it but my 2008 felt different after having the 10,000 checkup done.
Just like you said, a bit less grunt.
I thought I was imagining things.
(I still may be!)

I'll ask them if they flashed mine too.

Don't forget, the ECM is 'adaptive'. When it's reflashed, it has to "learn" again. Take it out for a run, remind it how to behave

My 08 has been behaving quite differently since my reflash. Especially the fan.

1) Fan come on when riding about 2500 rpm or so.
2) Shuts down when the bike stops at lights and idles.
3) Does not come on after riding.

It is strange. I was getting used to the fan noise after parking it.

THe bike also is a bit gruffer at low end. I kind of like it. But the fuel mileage does seem better.

I think the reflash (08/09)is an update overall...and includes a new fan sequence based on mph. My fan does not run as much with new flash...but there seems to be less power but more smoothness. Anybody else?

I have the comfort kit but mine's an 06' and now the only time I can get the fan to come on is at shutdown.

The comfort kit really does cool the bike better as it reduces the fan run-time without the ECM changes. The combination should produce long life. Anybody know if the ECM change was more than a fan moderation? I sense a performance change.

Eulysses,

I don't know what all was changed, but my bike certainly does run differently (better). It was more than just the fan control. Smoother idle and smoother throttle response down low. Seems to start better too. I think they fattened up the fuel map because I seem to be getting just a bit worse fuel economy.

Mine too Rwven. Maybe the new smoothness feels less gruntie. Gruntie. You all know what gruntie is, right? :-)

My 08 X went in for fueling problems and had a new ECM and the fan characteristics changed to opposites. Before it was only on when stopped and now it is nearly always on after warming up.

Have a backfire problem and am told there is no ECMspy for 08> to sort the fuel mapping out yet. Anyone know different ?

Today it was running ratty...did not idle on start...died a couple times. Never did that before. Now surges up to 3500 or so...bad gas? I wish I had the original 09 settings back. I liked the bike then. Scary to take to a dealer.

Before I ordered the comfort kit for a customer I did some extensive Q&A with the boys at Tech services and my inside guy at BMC. According to my sources, the ECM update changes nothing but the software that controls the fan. The Idea was to make the fan "less annoying to the rider".

I am watching this thread with great interest. I have zero problems with my 08 but I am interested in updates just the same. I installed the rider comfort kit and could care less about the fan running and when. Is the consensus that rideability has changed with the ecm flash or is it the rider comfort kit coupled with the several other re-flashes that were added over the years? Its my understanding that as time goes on everything gets added to the latest and greatest ecm flash and thats what you will get when you "update."

Rwcfrank...I don't know. It was new 09 so latest ECM and running fine. The ECM update that corralates with the fan timing changed things...smoother but less grunt it seems. All subjective. Now I have a roughness and dying at start up (might be older gas I used) and some surging up to under 4K rpm. Time will tell. I have not seen any flags on this throughout the comfort kit install thread (but did not see all thread) and know the comfort kit definitely reduces temps and fan time by itself is what I get from my study there. I have not installed my kit and only did the ECM update as I was near a dealer. Perhaps there is some other adjustment the 1K dealer check does that could affect these things.

The ECM reflash only changes the fan operation. If you have an older flash, you will be getting the fan change along with the latest map.

So Froggy, I have an 06 with the race ecm. Do they have a fan update for mine?

Latest...09 started nice tonight...idled good for warm up. It had come off a trailer with 2 days being towed which may ?? have had something to do with starting rough.

Ulys don't like being on trailers... for a few minutes there it probably thought it was a Harley!

Eulysses,
Chances are it caught a slight cold whilst riding on the trailer and just was hacking up a phlegm ball the first time you started her up.

If you changed elevation much it may be adjusting for the elevation change.

Is any body having surging issues in the 4k range with the new flash? My fan runs a lot less and hardly runs at all when I stop the bike, but I am getting inconsistent fueling around the 4-4.5k range. It is very frustrating.

I installed the comfort kit on my 09 XT but have not had the ECM flashed yet.
Bike runs flawlessly, fan runs much less, sometimes not at all after shut down. Thinking I might pass on the flash.

Rwcfrank...major elevation change. Great point. MT to WA coast. Thepod...seems my surging is now at higher rpms...could handle it at 2200 but high 3's...NO! Bcmike...wish I could go back. Maybe I can!

When the dealer plugs in the digital tech, they get two options, latest flash with the kit and latest flash without. No older calibrations available as far as I know.

Froggy...yer sayin that we could go back to older specs then...might cure the surging. Seems like power is back and smoother but don't like "fan-off" when I shut down as cooling more important than stares to me. Surging is the big issue. Anyone know if surging is an issue outside of this ECM update? Thanks...

My Uly surged before and after the update. The update didn't help anything. Furthermore it runs like crap when it's first started and until it gets hot. After a half hour cool down last weekend I started her up again and she bucked and snorted and like a wild horse and spit like a camel. Once on the road again everything smoothed out. My dealer tells me that nothing is wrong though. For now I guess I'll have to put up with the wild animal that she is until I can get a second opinion.

No, I stated that there is two versions of the flash, one for bikes with the kit and one with out. Only difference is the fan operation strategy. The bike will run the exact same otherwise.

I got it. Helps to read twice nowadays. Now I wonder which flash I got. Did not have kit on at the time. That dealer is 750 miles away.
