All,
I found a place today that I felt it was safe to wind up my '09 XP today. I discovered that it is governed to aprox 115 mph! My 06 X would go to 130 indicated. I think it's silly that they would put a 160 mph speedo on a bike that they governed to 115 mph, but no one ever consults me with such matters first. Anyhow, I'd like to eliminate the top speed governing. Does anybody know how to do this? I do plan to take this bike to the track often and continue annoying the sport bike riders as I did with the '06 Uly I had. Thanks!

This is the first I have ever heard of an artificial limit on one of our bikes.

The XR1200 has a governor @ 115mph as well. Plenty of revs left.

DAMHIK. ; )

I know only of a Rev limit but not a speed limiter.
What are your indications of a speed limiter? Is it like hitting the soft rev limit or a hard rev limit? Does it act like the spark skip?

Maybe it is a XP thing due to it being sold to the government that have safety concerns for the workers??

Check the part number of your ECM compared to a standard Ulysses to see if they are different.

Hmm, one of the oddities of the XP? I wonder what other things might be different? I also just picked up a new XP. Love the bike. It's also my first Buell, and, so far so good.

Since I have nothing to compare it to I haven't noticed anything that might seem different. One thing I have wondered though is that the fan pretty much runs non-stop. At shut off, it runs for a solid 5 min. I was wondering if maybe the bike is programmed for the fan to run more since they might be expecting low speed maneuvers more often being a cop bike? Just a thought. How's your fan?

What if I told you all 2008+ models including the 1125R share the same ECM? : )

The calibration on the ECM might be different, but without hooking it up to a computer there is no way to check.

I don't know if the new one's act the same as the '06's, but the more you run them hard, the harder they will run. That 'learn' programming I guess. I can take mine out and flog it, the more I do so, the more it wants to go faster.

Have you got that thing broke it yet? Both of the new XB's I have had, seemed more alive after 10,000 miles.

Upon reaching 115 mph in either 4th or 5th gear, the engine began to misfire at an even cadence. This might be what you're referring to as skip-spark, but I've never had that happen to me before so I don't know. It's different than the rev limiter.
The ECM number is Y0152.1AM 08318
This really bothers me. I bought a Buell because I wanted a performance motorcycle. It's silly to have a speedo that reads 160 mph and then it fizzles at 115. A Cop bike at that! This is unacceptable to me.

alright, I'll take one for the team. Tomorrow, I'll get out on my new XP, and, see what it'll do. Maybe, at least we can start to narrow down whether this is your bike, or, an XP thing.

Hey, Busykat, how many miles are on yours? Mine has 1600 on it right now.

Stay tuned.

Why put a 160 mph speedo on a bike rpm/gear limited to 140mph?

If the XP is a police issue than it may have a rev limiter. Or you were in 4th not 5th.

Anyone else have an 09 they have put on the track? My 09 1125CR will do 140 indicated and keep pulling.

The 160mph speedo has nothing to do with the bikes actual top speed, which is about 140 bouncing off the redline in 5th.

The top speed on the CR is just under 160, due to the short gear ratios.

There is an rpm limiter on my 09 I found today...blowing past 7k rpm (3rd gear) it did the alternate firing thing. I had just done the ECM update getting ready for my comfort pack.

Yes, they all have rev limiters. What the OP was suggesting is that it kicks in at a lower RPM in the higher gears.

redline is fun in 3rd gear isn't it? : )

Guys,
It's not the rev limiter. "Upon reaching 115 mph in either 4th or 5th gear, the engine began to misfire at an even cadence."

Was there an indicator light flashing, or just the skip?

It won't be an overheat indication without a flashing engine light.

Could be just fouled plugs. As in need to replace them from show room start ups.....yeah I know.....even anti fouling plugs.

...actually, we *can't* do anything. Any time you hook a vehicle up to Digital Tech, it reads the VIN and the current flash ID. It will then show any available flashes for that vehicle/VIN.

I'll have to do some digging. I'm intrigued now as to whether there's a governor on the XP. I guess it's possible...but opposite of the automotive world, where a cop Charger has a higher top end cutoff (and a real traction-control OFF button as opposed to the "slightly retarded" choice) than a civvy Charger.

My theory is that it comes from the factory with a different ECM calibration than the normal X.

"Upon reaching 115 mph in either 4th or 5th gear, the engine began to misfire at an even cadence."

Then that is a governor. 115 is your max speed unless you can disable it or get a different ecm without it.

Thanks Dad4. I've not had a chance to pursue any further yet. There's only so many places I'm willing to go that fast, and I've no track nearby. The place where I did go that fast isn't close by, so it'll have to wait.
I thought by now somebody might've had an answer beyond speculation, but not so.
Jim_williams, have you had a chance to see what yours will do?

May be a plug wire that starts flopping around at a 115 mph wind speed. 4th should be good for about 125 indicated, thats where I shift to 5th on the XT.

All XB's are "rev" limited to protect the engine.

All XP's are "speed" limited due to police cargo.
