Installed the new ETS which was pretty easy to install. For the price of a $2.89 10" rod saw blade for my hacksaw I was able to modify a 2.75" long 1/2" impact socket. Sawed the full length twice to end up with a 1/4" wide slot to accommodate the ETS wire. Worked like a dream to remove the old and install the new. Couple of wear spots and a small crack in the insulation on the old ETS but didn't look like they would leak current since they weren't into the wire.
Low 70's outside today. Went for about a 90 mile ride but couldn't get the swingarm oil temp above 190 F and the fan wouldn't come on. Fan of course came on at shut down. Needed to tool around in town to see higher temps but had to get back for the Iowa vs Arizona game. My Hawkeyes won. The new battery sure fires the ULY up lickity split with zero hesitation compared to the old worn out battery. You guys with starter hesitation, it's probably a weak battery and not ground points.

Apparently I replaced the ETS and didn't need to. Road today and got my oil in the swingarm to register 200 F and still the fan doesn't turn on. Fan turns on fine when the key is turned off. I sure wish others could tell me how hot their swingarm oil is when their fans are turning on. I don't particularly want the fan turning on all the time but sure want it on when it is supposed to turn on. What all does the ETS control on our ULYs? BTW my ULY runs like a top.

ETS: My guess(?) it controls the Fan on/off; ignition timing; skip spark mode, fueling via injector duration.

Injector duration. Wouldn't that be a function for the Oxygen sensor?

Yes; but its not that simple, there are other inputs that can affect injector duration too.

vehicle speed
engine speed
throttle position
engine temp
intake air temp
O2 sensor

Speaking of O2 sensors, wouldn't it make more sense for the unit to be placed where the headers collect rather than just one pipe?

Xbimmer,
I google "how does oxygen sensor work" and got this: http://www.aa1car.com/library/o2sensor.htm

After getting out the service manual I verified that our ULY utilize a one wire o2 sensor which means it relies on engine heat to operate once the ETS signals the ECM to go into Closed Loop mode. That site above shows o2 sensors mounted past a catalytic converter but I'm assuming they are o2 sensors that have built in heaters and only measure against values of the other o2 sensor for converter efficiency. Anyway it seems that Buell chooses to stay with the one wire "exhaust" heated o2 sensor and to keep it hot enough it needs to be very near the exhaust valve.

Makes sense to me, but it would be nice if the ECM knew what both cylinders were doing. Hence the new 2010 system I guess.
