Yes. Wires on fuel pump run unprotected across a bracket inside the fuel tank on the pump. Relatively easy fix. R&R fuel pump, can be done in a couple of hours the first time out. No special tools needed unless you want to buy the puller from HD. Need a few 'O' rings, a couple of zip ties, some heat shrink for the wires, some vasoline to make the big 'O' rings slide back in. This is the best time to replace the fuel filter and pickup screen filter. If you get all of this from HD it is about $45.00. Need to unbolt the bottom of the rear shock, jack up the bike for clearance, best to be low or out of fuel, pulling drain plug it flows fast. Four bolts on the pump base, one hi pressure fuel line, one four wire plug. If you are on your trip, and the bike is still running well, it should not be a problem. Mine did it when I was nearly to Daytona in March. Rode back to Tenn, and a few hundred more miles before I did the repair. I had a thread with pictures somewhere in BBD back in March or April. I haven't figured the linking process yet, sorry. | ||

How do you get the pump out without the puller? Mine has been doing this off and on. Is it okay to let it go for a month or so, I want to wait until the end of the riding season. | ||

I used two wide blade pry bars, big straight screw drivers would work also. It comes out quite easily, just pay attention to working it out evenly. With the bottom shock bolt out and the bike jacked up to maximum swing arm droop, work it slowly and evenly. When it is past the main flange(two big "O" rings) it will kind of screw out. You have to pull it slightly out towards you and rotate it at the same time. Do it slowly so as not to create damage and watch it carefully as this is the path it must follow going back in. |
