I'm having a odd issue where the bike is cutting out while riding, It will suddenly loose power for about ½ sec, just long nuff for me to look down at the gauges to see what's wrong. The check engine light will stay on for a few more sec. When I checked the first time it was not throwing a code. I haven't checked today to see if it still is. 06 Uly that is otherwise running great.

It had happened 3 times before but always a month or more in-between so I would forget about it. Now I'm traveling and it happened 4 times on the road. Not only is it disconcerting but if it cuts out while I'm leaned over it could be bad.

I've been looking through other peoples but I don't see this issue or missed it. Any ideas on what I should look for ?

Check sparkplug wire. Rear one prone to chafing against fixed clamp. Manufacture now makes a different wire (shorter).

Also look inside the boot (using bright light) for possible corrosion.

I've had the same issue for a while since dealing with my skip spark issues.
My BAS has always given me problems, and I've had a spare, so I changed the BAS out. No difference.
Everything I've done has seemed to fix the SSBS, but I have had the "stall" issue 3 times since. Twice at highway speeds, and once in your worst case situation -- pulling away from a stop while leaned over.
ALMOST dropped it on that one.

I have had the same thing for the last month or so. Yesterday I finally started to tear the bike down to look for the cause. So far I have found two almost broken wires, which became fully broken once I started handling them. One was a black ground wire right at the connector to the ground point under the flyscreen, which led to the headlight harness, which has not be a problem. The other one was a red wire from a previous repair job in the area of the steering head area. I'm doing a bunch of other repairs/upgrades while I have everything torn apart...so I don't yet know if this will be fix.

Had a problem with my seat pressing down on the ECM. The bike would backfire & cut off. New ECM, and a few washers on the seat latch to raise it up fixed it. This was a stumper, but found it by accident. Was leaning on the ECM while it was running, trying to figure it out, and sure enough it started misbehaving.

Also had to replace the plug wires. The new wires are better than what came on my 06. The stock wire in the rear was rubbed raw. (looked like the dealer put electrical tape over the hole at one of the services).

We call that the FL/R/S. or Flashy Light/ Run/ Skip. A situation where the ECM is Receiving bad information from a compromised Engine Temperature Sensor, and or wire. It is showing the ECM that the bike is overheated when it is not, making it go into Run-Skip as if it were. No codes present, or misleading codes from wrong information sent to the ECM.

SSBS! That is so fitting for a one year and six month intermittent problem!

If you've never had the fuel pump out to check for chafed wires NOW IS THE TIME. Usually causes permanent shutoff, but could conceivably be momentary if it is shorting intermittently. Worth checking for the peace of mind.

Etennuly and Florida_lime glad your issues seem to be worked out. Been following your troubles it the trouble-light err SSBS thread.

I quick once over is not showing anything. I need to do a full going over, including the fuel-pump ( good point ) but that's a little more than I want to do while on the road.

Did have the batt. checked out at autozone. Passed but it's the OEM and I'm thinking I should replace it sometime this year.

My wild guess is that a short/lose wire or something is causing the ECM to reboot. It's the exact same every-time, 1/2 sec or so of no power and 2-3 sec of eng. light.

Mine's an 08 and I get the pause but no light. Have managed to notice that it is always between 35 and 3900 RPM. Must be a vibration freq for some semi-loose ground that I haven't yet found.

The seat could be doing the press the plug thing. Do you have two seat riser blocks on the ECM? If you have only the front one, see if you can move it to the back bolt, the back location is more important to keep the seat off the plugs. Try unplugging the ECM plugs, turn each of them one revolution, plug them back in. Place something that will provide insulation over the ECM, I think that due to proximity of the seat bottom to the ECM static discharge can happen.

I'm having the same problem now too.
First time was on monday while I crossed the border from Belgium into France on my way to the Black Forrest in Germany.
It kept giving me problems the entire week.
I will check out all my wires tomorrow.

Etennuly ... I think you may have it. I only have one riser block and it was on the front. Also have one of Odies heat blankets and you can see where it is was rubbing on the rear ECM connector.

I moved the block to the back and on the return leg of my trip I did not have it cut out once.

Two things to be aware of if anyone else does that switch. The block was a little to tall and I had to sand it down some, otherwise it was very had to get the seat to latch. At that point I was commited to the block on the new spot so I'm glad it worked. Also, the front ECM bolt has a nut underneath that will fall off if you don't know it's there and one could spend ohh 5min hunting around for it only to drop it again trying to get it back in place. Luckly the plastic underneath is shaped to keep it from spinning because it's very hard to reach.

I have checked all the wires to the ecm. Placed everything back as should be and did a 200mls ride. Bike didn't glitch once.
It's back to it's old perfect state.

Towards the end of this post I added some pics of my 'temporary repair' - it is an idea to ensure both ECM plugs are protected from the seat that can be put together for almost nothing. It also shows the double ECM block modification from XBIMMER and part number etc.

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/465269.html?1246153230

These are the required components if you wanted to try this method.

These connectors are soldered to a circuit board in the ECM and then potted with some version of RTV. There isn't enough strength in this type of set-up to adequately cater for forces outside the connection of the loom etc. The partial weight of the rider via the seat is not friendly to the ECM connectors. On Mine I noticed the RTV had split around the connectors and a little downward force with my finger would show this split - it was only a question if time before one or more solder connections / circuit traces were cracked by this action.

Whatever route you choose is up to you but I strongly suggest getting any downward force off the connectors.

As an update.

Moved the spacer, re-did the main ground. By re-did = Unscrewed the ground wire, sanded all the surfaces for the ground, put in a star washer. plus a new battery and my electrical issues seem to be fixed. The ECM was throwing a code 53 ( bad ECM ) but I think that was because of the battery. I'll get some help to clear the code and find out for sure.
