Ok guys and gals once again I need to rely on your knowledge and experience. I recently bought a new 2008 XT. Ran great for the first 700 miles or so. Now during cold starts 6 out 10 times it starts up, runs for 1-2 seconds and then shuts off. I try again and bam its on and working fine. Never an issue during warm starts. What gives?

I wish I had the answer for you. My 08XT does exactly the same thing and has for quite awhile now. I've even had the re-flash after the comfort kit install but it still does it. My dealer has had it in twice but tells me that it runs fine for them. Another problem I have is that when cold it spits and backfires on acceleration and pops on deceleration even when hot. I'm perplexed and unhappy with this and don't believe it to be normal or part of the bikes character.

My 09 will do that if I let the battery run down (ie, sitting for a long time). Never happens when it's on the tender. Why? I have no idea.

Mine used to do that but not anymore.
I think it was just "tight"
Now it has 21,000 on it.

Mine did that last winter, mainly when temps were under 40*F. I cycled the kill switch and second try, she always fired right up and ran with no problems.

Try turning the key on and letting the fuel pump run, then turn the key off and back on letting the pump run a second time. Then try to start it. Could be it's not building enough pressure before it times out. If that doesn't do it then at least you know the pumps ok.

Mine did that as well and like others have said you need to break it in. Mine (2009 XB12X) started running much better at 5K miles and the gas mileage improved at about 5 to 7K miles.

I would check your intake seals. If it was slightly lean when cold it would pop and back fire like that, until it warmed up.

I agree with Frank. My bike is NOTHING like it was before break-in. I have 9000 miles on my 09 x and it is getting better every ride. Out of 8 bikes I have owned over the years, I have never had one that changes (for the good) so drastically!

My XB12R was the same way. However RD may have a good idea and a change of plugs is worth a try if the problem is extreme.

My bike is totally stock, no loud exhaust, stock air filter etc. I bought it in Jan of this year and it was hard to get settled down to idle at 30 to 40 degrees and would cut off at times however, it just seems to get better and now has 11K miles but it did that for about 5K miles. I always thought it was because it is somewhat lean but I could be wrong.

My 08XT did the same thing and it turned out to be a hair line crack in the ecu causing the issue.

TPS Reset? Way too easy on the 2008+ models to not try.

I guess the good news is that it doesn't seem I'm alone in this issue and no one so far has reported any significant issues. The bad news is that I'm not alone. I'm due for my 1000 mile service so I am going to mention it to the techs and see if they have come across this issue. I will report back if I find anything out. Thanks guys.
