Well I got a call at 10:45 pm Friday night that they needed an instructor for an ERC Saturday morning. I agreed to do it, so I was up at 5:20 packed the bike and headed out.

This was my first solo ERC class and first ERC on the ULY. All I can say is I had a great time! The bike handled magnificently. I did the 24ft box with no problem and was at full steering lock for the 20ft box (still not an issue).
I had so much fun doing the 135 degree curve that I did the demo twice. I even touched down a footpeg (that was fun).

Over all, it was a great day riding a great bike (09 XT).

Mike

Mike,
I'm a RiderCoach too and use the Uly for demos often. They're quite the capable machine! I like harshing the buzzes of sport bike riders on tracks with mine too. I explain to those curious about them that I needed a well rounded motorcycle that could do a lot well, not just one thing great. Keep preaching the faith Mike. --Michael

Great to see another RiderCoach here. Thanks for the response. I am thinking a track day is on the short list.

I'm a RiderCoach too. I have an '06 Uly and have done the 20ft box on it, but it requires a big counterweight and clutch slippage.

All my students are always curious about my Buells.

I'm getting set to sign up for an Advanced Rider Course or a Total Control course and am up in the air about whether to take the '06 Uly or the H-D Dyna. I ride the Uly more, a fact that behooves me to use that bike, but - dang it - I also want to pass the (expensive) course and take advantage of potential insurance savings!

I'm pretty good on the Uly at low speeds, but I have a strong feeling the Harley might be a little easier to maneuver. And I can always test myself on the Uly after the course, right?

Thoughts? Experiences?

I would want to do it on the lighter bike.

I have taught several ERC's and Skills Practice on my Uly. Always fun on this bike. I can do the box in much less than the 20' lines (just wish I had the 08 with better turn stops).

I agree the 135 degree turn is lots of fun as is exercise 9.

Hooper, I have an 08 Low Rider in the garage next to the ULY. Ride the ULY, it is much easier and more fun.

I have taken the Total Control class. Two different animals. The ERC is a good step up from the Basic Rider's Course. Most of the exercises are the same, just done on your own bike.

The Total Control class is a lot of fun. I learned a lot. I never "dragged a knee" but it did enhance my skill level. They look at things like fear, traction, suspension setup and other things much more technical than the ERC. I wish it was longer than 1 day and I did find it a little expensive ($300 here).

Our instructor was marginal but I did learn a lot. If you can get it taught by Lee Parks himself then it would be pretty awesome.

Hooper,
I vote for taking the Uly to the T-CARC. I had a 2002 Dyna before my 2006 Ulysses, and although it was a good bike, it didn't have as much ground clearance. I darn near knife-edged the underside of that Dyna!
I'm looking to take a T-CARC course soon, and am re-reading Lee Parks Total Control right now. Let us know how you like the course.
Doing the 20' box on a full sized bike is an opportunity to demonstrate the techniques in a conspicuous way that the smaller bikes don't really show. It makes it more clear to the student what to do. My 2 cents.

Yeah, I guess I'm learning about the differences between the two classes. Sounds like the Uly is a no-brainer for the Total Control class.

Thanks everyone...

Getting rid of the stock Harley exhaust did wonders for its clearance.

Hooper I just became a Total Control instructor with the ULY : ) If you take your Harley you'll be kicking yourself.
The Harley would be good for an ERC however because of the crash avoidance skills you learn like braking, swerving, etc. Total Control you will learn more on suspension and how you can effect the bikes traction. Tracy Martin is Lee Park's partner in Total Control he is here in Maryland and was a big part of the book, and others. He writes for Motorcycle Consumer News and other publishers. Tracy is really technical when it comes to the class he is really good. I'm learning under him, have been for 2 years now. I took the Total Control level 2 on the ULY and it was a blast! If you have any questions please contact me. K
