Hey everybody. Just wanted to let my fellow buell riders know about a trip I'm taking that will be testing and pushing the limits of the Ulysses. On August 23rd I'm going to be trailering up from the Southernmost point in the US (Key West) to the start of a trip across a good chunk of America on back roads with two fellow riders. The other 2 bikes are BMW. One brand new, another with over 100k. I have made several mild mods to the bike and several more are coming in the next week. As for tires I'm going to be running MT 60's. Wish there was a better option but 60/40 should work way better than my old syncs. I will be doing most of my posting on the trip's blog: http://tat09.blogspot.com/ Please go there if you want to follow the story of the Uly on an extended off-road trip. The blog shows the exact trail we will be taking. IT's all part of the Trans American Trail. We will be avoiding very heavy mud, as well as and any very technical passes. We are on adventure bikes not dirt bikes after all. NO doubt...this should be a blast ! I really hope to meet some of you out there in America. We will be coming off trail every night to find gas,food,lodging so i'll be visiting alot of towns along the way. Much of te trip will be documented since i shoot for a living (gun for hire). Steve - Hmmm - yeah, I removed my Touratech foot pegs, couldn't reconcile the poor ergonomics for my build, bootsize and shifting ease. Replaced with precision engineering version - they are EXCELLENT! I like 'em better than the TTs AND your foot position is same as stock...no 1" drop. A little late I know, but they could have 'em fedexd to you by Thurs - takes 5 mins to install. Good luck. j | ||

Since you'll be in Utah, head over and run Hwy 12 from Torrey to Panguitch then turn around and do it again. The Hogsback stretch is particularly cool, just keep your eyes on the road.  | ||

Mt 60's are on. Wow. It's a different bike. I didn't know I could lean so far. For some reason these tires absolutely let me lean with confidence. So far only test has been on street. Footpegs: A fellow badwebber woke me up to the fact that I didn't have to suffer with the touratech pegs I just put on. I called precision engineering and they agreed to send me standard and 2" drop pegs. I try both then return the ones I don't want when I get back cool. Touratech also is taking their pegs back. Cool. They agreed even though I'm way past 30 days. More to come. Watch the blog for more info and posts from my 2 buddies on this trip. We leave Sunday at 0dark30. Steve | ||

Steve - Prec Eng includes a bushing that makes installation a breeze. I think you'll find the standard configuration to your liking - particularly if you go back to the stock shifter. Either way you got a spare for the trip...and I would consider taking one. With those Brushguards your hand controls are well protected, but the shifter is vulnerable. Trust me on that. CAUTION: the peg nubs are real 'pointy' so handle accordingly. Got gloves? Cheers, j | ||

Whew.....I'm glad to be able to report that we all made it to our destination in Moab. All three bikes are safely here outside our motel. The f-800 and the Uly are ready to do it again tommorrow. All they would need is a wash......and um, a new rear tire on the Uly. The front is near new, but the rear is toast. The 1150gs needs a few important repairs before doing any more offroad. This is due to the fact that the bike started this trip with 110,500 miles on the odometer. Needless to say, that after so many miles offroad in a short time, I learned alot about the bike and the gear I chose to compliment this trip. I have posted some general pics and story on our trip blog ( tat09.com). However, in order to share much more about the Uly specifically for those who are interested in the performance capabilities of the buell, I will be posting detailed info here shortly. Getting some rest tonite as we are going to explore the Moab area by road for the next two days. One thing I can share with my fellow Buell riders at this point is how genuinely impressed my fellow BMW riders were by the offroad performance of the Ulysses. Believe me, they were skeptical in the beginning. However, after just a few days into our 10 day Tat trip, both my buddies and I realized something... The bike is extremely tough and fast offroad. | ||

I realize now the power of the GS reputation. It doesn't mean that the bike is the greatest and most useful and able bike on the block for the job (though many believe it is), but that it does pretty well at many things. Then you hear that a Uly does pretty well too. And so the Uly starts to build a reputation. It will never be as widespread as the GS, but it will improve. And as the Uly reputation improves, it will shine a light on the drawbacks of the GS. Awesome ride and ride blog! | ||

The Uly will go everywhere the driver decides to steer it. Trackdays to Dustybutt 1000's to the TAT to the LD rallies. Truly the Swiss Army knife of the current motorcycle pool to choose from !!! |
