So, after successfully installing Oxford heated grips (Which are excellent by the way)and hooking up my GPS. I park my bike at home and one of the side stand fasteners sheers off.

From a quick look at the archives on here it appears these bolts need to be checked frequently. Nothing like finding out the hard way.

The remaining bolt also appears to be just long enough to require the exhaust to be removed in order to get it out. What a pain in the ass. At least it happened at home though. Do these bolts not have a locking washer of some description?

So for a temporary fix I have managed to unscrew the remaining part of the sheered fastener far enough to hold the side stand in place and of course have tightened the surviving fastener.

Tomorrow I'll have to go in search of a replacement fastener. Can anybody tell me what size they are, and what thread? I am over 2 hrs from a Buell dealer. Hopefully I can find something in the local hardware store. Removing the exhaust in the parking lot to match the bolt does not sound like my idea of a good time. Help!!!

I also noticed there has been a recall on some 06 sides stands. Do I just call Buell Customers service with my VIN to find out if mine is OK? Obviously my fastener is pooched, but that wasn't the recall from what I can tell.

Cheers.

Mine broke off on Sunday. Bolts are 5/16"x1-1/4"NC. I used a grade 8 bolt with a 3/8"SAE flat washer. The washer seemed to fit the hole in the kick stand better. Used blue loctite for easier removal next time. I had to remove the muffler to get the broken bolts out. Used a carbide bit to drill the holes in the bolts in order to use an extractor. Yes, it was fun! You should also replace the 3 bands holding the muffler. Took me about 1-1/2 hours. I will replace these bolts periodically.

I also run grade 8's where my stand mounts to the case.

You can send me your VIN; I can access HD's computer from home and check for recalls for you. Or, you can call a dealer with your VIN and they can run it for you - whichever is easier for you.

The sidestand recall was a change from a threaded pivot fastener (where the stand pivots in the mount; not where the mount goes to the case), to a pin with a C-clip.

The cause of the problem is not entirely with the bolts. The fit between the sidestand mounting plate and the engine case needs to be checked and most likely trued up a bit. I did mine with a flat file. That along with new grade 8 bolts and blue locktite cured it for good. I seem to be getting away with re-using the muffler straps so far.
