I also need luggage rack to mount it.
and would like the size of trunk to be able to hold two large helmets .
I found online a shad sh50 top case it is large enough for $287.95 but would need a luggage rack then .so even a good luggage rack would work .

the outdoorsman luggage looks big enough for 2 full face helmets. Hear blots of good feedback about them on here and they are made by buell so definetley fit with the docking kit.

The outdoorsman top case dooes fit two ff helmets (but nothing else)
I'm not sure you can just buy the top case as there sold as side cases or top and side cases.

The side rails are integral to the entire structure.

One key locks/unlocks both the cases and the units from the bike. Very easy to remove and re install

1200 US for both

I'm running Twisted Throttle's topcase rack and a Givi E470 topcase. Pretty cheap option. It holds my full face helmet and my coat. I use it for daily commutes to work mostly. I also used it on a recent trip to Alaska. I'm very happy with the setup, especially how it keeps the bike narrow. Many say the weight back there is an issue, but be reasonable with what you put in there and you'll be fine. There is not a large capacity on the label anyway.

+1 on the Twisted Throttle rack ( IIRC made be Fehling) and a Givi top box. I'm running a smaller one now, E33, but with this rack you can pretty much put any Givi on it. Much cheaper than the full set of luggage.

If you want to add the Buell topbox and don't have a Buell rack (which Buell will not sell by itself), it can be done by buying the Palmer Products rack (http://palmerproducts.auto.officelive.com/buellxb12x.aspx) and adding the Hepco Becker universal bracket (http://www.adventurersworkshop.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=610_050_00_01&Category_Code=Top_Cases_and_Saddlebags__Top_Case_Mounts)

As far as I know, the Buell box uses the Hepco Becker mounts. The Buell topbox is a little small though (40 liters). I added the Hepco Becker 50 liter box instead. Enough room for my full face helmet and aerostitch. The topbox matches the Buell bags, but the HB trim is silver, while the Buell is kind of a bronze. This winter I'll probably buy the HB trim for my bags to get a matched set.

My bike's at the dealer, so I can't post pictures of the minor mods to the Palmer bracket necessary to mount the Hepco Becker universal bracket (cut a small section off of the back), but if you're interested I can post them when I get the bike back around the 15th.

It's just my opinion, but I still think this is the sweetest top box going. It will hold light weight sleeping gear (tent, pads & sleeping bag) and still room for a dry bag on top. Will be mine when my higher priority list has been exhausted.

Thanks for the ideas guys.

After using my new Buell standard side cases for the past week I have started to realize a trunk would be nice to have as well.

Looking at the palmer rack mentioned by Steve046 and the twisted throttle rack mentioned by Marks3tbillet has me wondering if they mount high enough above the brake light for visibility. The OEM Buell rear rack is a lot higher above the brake light.

Does anyone know if Buell uses the same rear rack for both the outdoorsman and the standard trunks?

Any one have an opinion on which rear rack is better, the palmer or the twisted throttle?

Thanks

There is only one Buell topcase rack; it fits either the Outdoorsman or the Journey box.

Steve046 - same thing I have in transit! I just ordered the HB 50 topcase (in black, because I have my panels painted to match my bike anyway and I'll paint this one as well) to go with my Buell/Journey sidecases. Oh, and the panels on the Buell boxes are tail-section titanium, which is available from Buell as a spray touchup if you want to paint your topbox to match.

I've also ordered the HB luggage rack for the top of the 50L, but it's on backorder for a couple weeks yet. My case, though, should be here Thursday. Can't wait to have more space up there, since I run topcase-only most times (with side racks installed, just empty).

I ordered the topcase for BT3 in Georgia...but riding my S2 to work today, I'm soooo tempted to take the ol' tuber instead. I ride the Uly in bad weather (which we've had a lot of lately), and when I do I keep forgetting how much I love the S2!

RatBuell,

You're going to love the extra space in the 50 L. I can fit a full face helmet and an aerostitch in the box. Thanks for the tip on the Buell paint. A lot cheaper than matching the HB by changing plastic pieces.

Steve - if you want to colormatch the bags to the bike on the cheap, you can go to a hobby shop and get plastic model paint. I used Testors in Ford Hugger Orange (I think - I'd have to check the label, it's either Hugger or Grabber but you can tell looking at the color dot on the cap). Dead-nuts match to the barricade orange bodywork : )

I installed the Givi 52 liter and its the best. Put it on the sw-motech rack (had to slightly modify the mounting of the stock racks, email me for specifics). Can put 2 helmets and other stuff in it, or a full aerostitch and some other junk. I just saw they came out with a 55 liter model. I was contemplating buying a 55 for the topcase and a second 52 and using the 52's as saddle bags. Maximum storage capacity.

Good lord, this 50L HB case is CAVERNOUS!

I don't have a pic of it yet, but if you look at the one above from Steve046, it gives you a good idea. I put it on last night and painted the center section orange to match my bike (and the other bags), loaded it up for the ride to work...and have TONS of space left over. Awesome. Now all I have to do is wire up my brakelight.

And for the mental note file, HB offers the case in black, and with a silver panel. The black one (which I got) does not have the removable panel at all; I had to mask and paint the case itself instead of removing a panel and painting it seperately. It's a $20 difference...but food for thought. It came out OK. My masking skills...well, let's just say I won't be painting stuff for Foose anytime soon. LOL. Once it gets the same level of grime on it the rest of the bike has...it'll be just fine ; )

I have to check my emails when I get home. I was looking around at a number of places but the deciding factor was these folks had it in stock. I'll get the info tonight.

Yeah, the 50L is huge. We put a 12 can sized softside cooler in there with lunch and waters for long trips and just pile other stuff around it. You really have to be careful about the weight because you can put so much in there. Just for comparison: Uly with 50L HB = 134 L total luggage. Honda Goldwing = 147. Mazda Miata = 144.

Yah, my main thing with the 50 is being able to stuff both our helmets in it if we're in a store or something. Beats hanging 'em off footpegs or mirrrors. If I'm packing anything heavy / liquid, it usually goes in the sidecases. Topcase is usually gear, spares, or dry goods.

Interesting volume comparo. Nearly as much as a Miata. Awesome! : )
