Couple questions for resident hooligans (not wannabees like Harley riders :-))...has anybody found the matching rattle-can for Barricade Orange? Or is it available from Buell?

Second question...what is 5th gear for? I have not found anywhere to use it :-).

I painted some bodywork (the panels on my Journey bags, and the base of my CeeBailey windscreen) with Testors plastic model paint (see your local hobby shop) in Ford Grabber Orange. I'm guessing "real" grabber orange would work too...but haven't found it at the auto parts place yet in the DupliColor paint.

THAT is exactly my intention Ratbuell. Maybe the shroud on the muffler too...
None of the cans I brought home last week really cut it...closest was School Bus Yellow from ACE Hardware. Will go on a Testor hunt. Thanks!

So have you wondered what it would look like if you did the wheels too?

Rat is correct, that is about the closest thing to a color match in a can. The factory didn't paint any of our parts, so no color code for paint was put on the bike.

I hand mixed mine out of my bodyshop mixing system. I did it before that Ford color was out. If I were to mix more I would get that formula and tint it from there to match.

Wow! You are waaaay down the road from me Etennuly. My Ebay side cases were used as bumpers so that was my motivation to yeller em. But you certainly did not want to waste all that paint you got perfect and she is a beauty. (Is a "she" right? :-)) Reminds me of "spats". Very dressy.

How did you do it? Like an automotive spray gun? How did you stick to plastic? I remember a product primer called IXM. Use that for plastic adherence? Lastly, did you clear coat it?

There is some serious safety in orange...comforts this old Boomer/dirt biker who has not been an asphalt guy before.

Did somebody just start welding in front of my eyes or put a camera flash in my face? I can't see anything now.

Ah, yer eyes will be fine in a few days.....just remember to wear shades!

I did it using all of the normal proper procedures for the brand of paint I use. Those are generally standard in the industry nowadays and require all of the normal professional paint shop equipment.

For the chin faring, I would recommend using a Scotch Brite pad with soapy water to sand it. To make it stick Bulldog brand has a spray can of adhesion promoter that works well. After scuff/washing it, dry it and then give it a wash down with mineral spirits, then wipe it completely dry and clean with lint free cloths. Apply a medium coat of the adhesion promoter according to their instructions, and give it a color coat with your best spray can ability.

The paint that you are looking at, the Testor's stuff, is an enamel and it is fairly low on the durability list for shine hold out, adhesion, and resistance to chipping. It can and will get the results of a color change for under $30.00 or so, and you will always have some left to keep it touched up. You can get some quasi urethane clear coat in a spray can that will help the finish look and stay good at autobody supply stores.

The stuff I use comes in quantity and is expensive to use. This color is mixed in a single stage Urethane and I integrated a clear coat in the last coat for a little more UV protection. If I calculate cost per pint of sprayable paint(as it goes on)it is around $85.00. That does not include the adhesion promoter and I used a flex agent in the paint for the chin spoiler because of the flexing that happens when accessing the oil filter, the rest of the parts do not need it.

Sometimes it is pretty cool though. Tonight I was at a gas station filling it up and a guy pulls up in a car beside me, not to get gas, but to ask me about my new Buell. He told me about wanting to trade his six year old 60,000 mile Duc Monster on a new Buell like my Uly. My Uly is three and a half years old and has 41,000 miles on it. I guess it still looks OK after I wash it. Did I mention In a few more years I expect 80,000 and will be looking forward to more. Oh, he thought it was new.....and more !

Are you selling the paint, Etennuly? Without being a body guy or confident in a spray gun I think the Testors for me on the bags is in order. Your masterpiece will remain unique in America...for now. Thanks for your help!

No, it is not user friendly stuff. To spray a pint of it, when you have to start from scratch with the supporting materials, would likely cost in the $800.00 neighborhood.

That is why professionals do what they do, and the home painter does what he can.(no pun intended)
