06' and 07' with comfort kit: fan runs only at shutdown. 08' and newer with comfort kit: fan only runs when bike is moving over 15(??) mph but not at shutdown. So one runs at shutdown and the other doesn't. Question is this, Why is the fan necessary? If it wasn't there in an 06/07 then it wouldn't create an impediment to air flow and then maybe it wouldn't need to run at shutdown which is apparently happening on the 08 and newer models. Do you guys see the conundrum here? If the fan was easy to remove then I'd take it out and see what happens without it for awhile. Mine is the original with just under 22,000 on it so it's never had a reason to be removed. | ||

There seems to be a flaw in the reported ECM logic. Why would the fan not run at <15 MPH? I was stuck in a huge traffic jam yesterday night. It was stop and go for a good 30 min. The fan ran almost the entire time. The fan shut down once we were moving again at normal highway speed. Than seems to be correct. That is why I was hoping to get some real data from Buell Any help out there? | ||

The new software combines several factors into the fan on/off strategy. Speed and engine temperature are 2 of them. The new software prevents the fan from coming on putting around town, but if say the engine gets too hot, like stuck in traffic, it kicks in. The reason the 06's kick the fan on at shut down is due to the different programming. Why is the fan necessary? Please, next time your going at parking lot speeds on a 100 degree day, take a look at your oil temp with the fan removed. I am sure it will be quite a bit more toasty than it is now  | ||

Anonymous reported that there was no ECM update for the comfort kit on '06-07 bikes. If the fan on an '06-07 doesn't run until shutdown, it is only because the temps never get to the point where the fan is turned on by the ECM - it just takes longer with the scoop and shroud. I'd bet that if you creep through start and stop traffic long enough, the fan will indeed come on. The '08+ do have a new fan strategy, and apparently one of the items is to try to not turn on the fan while sitting in traffic (unless it gets too hot) to keep from dumping hot fan-forced air on the rider, likely at the expense of somewhat higher engine and oil temps. Anybody able to tell me how hot their swing arm oil temps are getting. My 06' gets anywhere between 180 and 205 F. That depends on the ambient temp. I also think my eng temp sensor is creeping higher as time goes by because in the past the temp didn't get over 195. | ||

I have EG's temp dipstick and I seldom see anything over 175deg ...but my fan pretty much runs constantly, and always after shutdown. I wear a full-face helmet and earplugs so I don't notice the fan, really. . | ||

I ran my temp sensor one day and it was about the same as before the kit. It was about 190. I would expect the oil may be running a little warmer since the fan is running so little but it seems about the same based on a test of 1 time. I may do a little more testing. I would think once the fan comes on then the temp would drop more than it did before the RSS. I ran into a big traffic jam and after about 15 minutes sitting dead still in the sun the fan did come on. Hot is hot when there is no air flow. |
