"I typically reserve insurance claims for severe damage or something that's beyond repair (think totaled)."

+1. Same with the home and cars.

You went to a track day, crashed and messed up your bike a little. Open your wallet and take care of it.

Yea you need to look at the wording of your policy, many will cover a track day as long as you aren't doing timed laps.

Honesty is the best policy! I talked to the adjuster and explained everything TRUTHFULLY. He was understanding and covered everything. Even my helmet, jacket, pants, gloves, and boots are covered! I'm a big fan of progressive for being willing to support track days like this.

Now I'm torn between two options:

1.) the bike is totaled and they are offering me $6900-500 deductible = $6400. Plus they would pay for the cost to replace all my gear.

2.) Not turn in the claim, and fix the bike up myself. I think I could get it fixed up for about $500

If I take option one, I could find a cheaper bike and walk away w/ cash in my pocket. For those of you who haven't done a track day...it's highly addicting and makes you want to get a track dedicated bike. This is something I'm considering doing. I loved my Uly but I can't afford to be shelling out $500 every time it goes down at the track (I plan on doing many more track days!).

If i take the second option, I'll have my beloved Uly back but at a cost: Money to buy the parts to get it road worthy, plus the potential resale loss down the road when I go to sell it (unless I replace all the scratched up items as well).

Good news - glad to hear it!

Two good options - only you can decide.

Motards sure look like a lot of fun on the track.

Hangon,

I can't believe you crashed! You were one of the best riders in the group. Those rumble strips do stick up pretty high in those corners though. I skipped the last session and was watching you at turn 6 on my way out. Looking good! I had no idea you went down. I just thought the day was over and left.

Glad to hear you're OK. Fix the Uly by whatever means you deem appropriate and get a track whor for the future. That way you won't miss any street time if there's a track mishap. Good luck and I hope to see you out there again. Cowboy boots are now confirmed as protective riding gear.

Hangon,

Sounds like you chose the best course of action.

IMO Inusurance is a legallized rip off. However, my integrity remains true. So for some others, if you are not willing to accept the fact your bike may be damaged/totalled at a track day, then you shouldn't get on the track.

Hangon,

Sorry to hear about your mishap. Glad you walked away. Let me know if you need any help getting your bike bolted back together.

Option 3: Take option one and ask how much to purchase the bike back from them. This is something I did back in 1999 when I crashed my first '97 Cyclone. It worked out wonderfully.

"Honesty is the best policy!"

Unless you are a liar. Liars suck. I'm astounded by how many folks are willing to sacrifice honor and integrity for a few bucks. You folks should be ashamed. I'm ashamed for you.

Uhhh... insurance companies have internet connections also. You decided to tell the truth (right decision, IMHO) the moment you put up your post.

I heard (no idea if it is true or not) that you want to make sure the insurance company knows it was not a time event of any kind. A good reason NOT to have a transponder on your bike.

Let us know who your insurance company is if they cover a novice / intermediate track day accident. That would be a feature in a policy that would make me want to do business with that insurance company...

Blake,
That was my first thought was to buy it back from them. Unfortunately, the adjuster told me that the state of Illinois does not allow the insurance company to sell the bike back to the person...it has to go to a wholesale bike auction house. However, it just so happens that the adjuster gave me the name and location of the auction where it is going....I might be taking a little road trip to bring the ol' Uly back home : )

Honesty first, anything else is too expensive. I only pay $164 a year, I would take care of it myself. May be why I only pay $164 a year.

>>>I don't mean to be rude but you're crazy if you admit to this happening on the track.

That is totally ridiculous.

Do you really think the insurance adjuster has never looked at a motorcycle before?

Before you do ANYTHING that stupid . . please careful review your state laws for insurance fraud.

On one level . . . . it's great to be honest. Some folks respond to that, some don't.

But . . on another level, doing 24 months (they REALLY take a hard line on insurance fraud) for wrecking your motorcycle, at least for me, would play hell on your life.

Ha . . that's nothing. You should see the e-mails I got for interceding in the "printing Buell stickers" debacle. The printer was a gem, contacted me the next morning, I got him the info to contact the licensing folks at HD/Buell. . . but by that night I had 2 scathing e-mails about screwing up folks' ability to steal.

I was trying to envision how their parents raised them, but am thrilled to admit I was incapable of understanding.

I've since answered 3 legit owner's e-mails of concern with "ain't my problem". I wanted to retire on my own, not get forced out of helping Buell owners but the choice was regrettably not mine.

I've just reread this thread and commend the fellow for doing the right thing. My windshield was broken today by a baseball hit from a schoolyard in Astoria Queens . . I think I'll tell the agent an alien craft landed on me. . .

Sounds like you should fix your Uly and pick up a track bike. Best of both worlds!!

I wish I were braver and did track days....too old and slow, I guess!!

There is nothing that says you have to go fast just because you're on a racetrack. I did my last track day on my Blast. : )

Well put. I'm yet to do a track day on the bike, just because I know how I can get in a car on track, but it really is about having a controlled environment to play more than going fast. I've spent several years racing cars and instructing drivers, and the ones that had the most fun were the ones who were most determined that they were going to be slow. At they end of the day, they weren't usually the slow ones.

Wonder of wonders.....went to Pocono Speedway with my buddy and his Ford GT....all of these 6 figure $$$,$$$ cars blasting around at triple digit speeds and more than one took on the wall in some fashion. Every car there had the license plate covered with blue painters tape. I asked why? .... Well it's common for folks to take pictures of smacked up supercars and post them in the interwebs. The insurance companies search for these photos and if they can identify the car, deny the claim. Seems the rich have no problem scaming the insurance companies. : (

side note: I was training a guy to operate a crane the other day and I told him, "Concentrate on being smooth not fast and the speed will just come".

update: after totaling the Uly I couldn't find another uly in my area that was priced according so I ended up buying a worn out '03 XB9R that will do for now. I picked it up on the cheap because it has dents/dings and high mileage, but it's still a Buell as far as I'm concerned: )
