Running errands around town yesterday, was downshifting for a traffic light that subsequently turned green. I thought I was in first gear, but engage clutch, and...nothing.

Pushed shift lever down a few times (there were cars behind me) but didn't feel a "clunk"...still no engagement. So I coast around the right-hand turn and stop in the gutter.

Broken belt? I looked back but couldn't see the belt well enough. Then I tried shifting up, and caught a gear. THEN I could shift normally.

First time I've EVER had even a missed shift with this tranny. Any of you had something like this?

Yeah that's happened to me before too with a lazy shift! BTW, don't EVER try to clutchless up-shift that tranny...made that mistake after jumping from my CBR929 to my Uly one day!

Hey Doc - Nope, never had that happen. Did have a pawl spring let go when I was trying to down shift for a stop, which stuck me in 5th gear - interesting 250 mi ride home. Sounds as though at least yours 'self corrected'. Mine required a bit of warranty work. j

Happens all the time to me on my Blast, occasionally on my XB, and once on my CR. Every time due to not giving it enough umph on the lever.

Has happened a few times after I got the Uly but not much since then because I am much more aggressive with the downshift now.

I've speed shifted the Uly before. I saw no ill effects.

Dr G, Yep, I get it a couple times a month. I loosely have associated it with crusing in 5th and trying to shift again. Then coming to a stop and losing gear just as you said.

Even if you have the clutch pulled I get a major knash when I put it into 2nd. From there to 1st is normal.

I've never had it happen anywhere near first or second. I have found one a couple times between fourth and fifth. I changed primary fluid and re-adjusting primary chain, and it has yet to reappear.

My Uly is the only bike I have never hit a false neutral on. I've hit the real one a couple of times by being lazy but that's about it.

Never hit a false neutral yet either. I do however have a problem hitting neutral until the bike is nice and warm.
I have to make sure I put it in neutral before shutting it down for the night or I'll have a heck of a time the next morning.

Keith,

That is usually a pretty good indication that you have a slightly over-filled transmission. Suggest that you check your transmission oil level and reduce it to minimum so that oil just touches the spring plate. It's important that the bike be upright, perfectly vertical and on level ground when you check the oil level.

Greg, My '06 Uly has the exact same issue occasionally. It only happens if I am trying to downshift from 2nd to 1st while the bike is stationary. Never has happened if I downshift while moving. Mine is still in warranty but really don't want a dealer tearing down my engine/trans. if I can simply ride around the problem. I would love to know the root cause of this or if it's just one of the weird/wonderful quirks of an XB.

I hit one once on my XB. Can't remember if I was going from 5 to 4 or 4 to 3. Happened while pulling out to pass a slow car. Tapped it down again and everything was fine. Once in over 20K miles... I can live with that.
