Hmm, thought I just posted this, but it didn't go through. I was wondering how some of you have routed the wiring for your extra electronic items. Right now I have my J&M 2003 CB/audio system and my Garmin 478 (with XM radio) hooked up. Most of the wiring is coiled under the airbox cover, and the power wires are running to an aux fuse panel under the seat. As it stands, it's a fairly clean install, but I was wondering how others might have routed similar wires. I'd prefer to not have four wires running out the front of the airbox cover, and up the handlebars. My fear is that running under the frame is going to be too hot. Any ideas? | ||

How much do you want to spend on wire? There is the really expensive option with Teflon insulated wire, some of which are rated to 200*C, or the cheaper option would be silicone insulated wire, rated up to 150*C. There are also some tapes that are designed for thermal insulation, but they usually end up being a hassle, and more expensive than the higher spec wire. I always try to run with the factory wiring harness, and have never had an issue. | ||

Part of the issue, is that some of wiring is the stock accessory wiring (the J&M is a real cluster the way it's set up) so I may need to do some taping. Right now there are two wires running in from the left (CB antenna wire and power cable to the CB). There are two running from the right (audio plug, running from the CB power cable - strange setup) and the GPS power cable. Where can you buy the tape and wire at retail? | ||

I used a piece of 14-3 SEOW cord and ran it through the frame along the wiring harness. If you use the ground lug on the steering head, and you don't care about color coding, you can get 3 20 Amp circuits out of it. | ||

Sleeving kit looks perfect - thanks! I'm using the frame bolts under the seat for ground. There was enough extra bolt, that I could screw another nut on to hold the ground wire rings down. It worked really slick. SEOW cord would make sense too. I'd never thought of that. (Message edited by discochris on August 18, 2009) |
