I'm nearing that time of needing my first fork service. For those of you who's done it yourselves, 1) How difficult it is to do and care to offer any tips and hints? 2) How much and what kind improvement did you notice after doing it? 3) How "critical" is this service if I don't get to it before the factory recommendation?

Lastly,

I recall someone mentioning the use of a special tool to make the process easier; anyone near the Portland area that has one and/or that may be willing to assist in exchange of beer, friendly conversation and a TPS reset via my garage laptop setup?

Thanks for the link. I have to do this soon for the 10k service and although it makes me nervous, I will not pay the dealership to do anything other than zero the TPS.

You trust them to zero the TPS but not do the forks? Usually its the other way around, they can't figure out anything that isn't supposed to leak : )

I'll look into it. Thanks froggy. I completely redid my vrod from suspension to ecm, from exhaust to bodywork and a little in between. The one time I let a dealership do anything they left a spacer out when they put the rear tire on. Caused a lot of damage and never again on any bike starting with the Uly.

Dealer screwed up my TPS reset. Got cable and software did it myself simple and corrected problem. I know better than to get the ecm spy software, I would cause major damage to bike.
