It's the last day of (paid) summer research, and our director is in a good mood (so too am I; gonna order my "Comfort Kit" today). With a little time on my hands I thought I'd do a quick calculation.

I've never bothered to compute the "shaking force" from the rotating unbalance of a typical motorcycle application, but here it is. Is it worth it to balance? I think so.

Hope you can read it satisfactorily (typeset in LaTeX; we don't use M$oft Word).

Anyway, I think a force in the 20 lb range is not negligible. And it goes up as the SQUARE of the speed, so if you go faster you get hammered a lot worse.

Hope you all have a good weekend!

Can you say that in english?

I just lost my 3/4 oz weights off of my wheel. Didn't notice enough difference to take the wheel off and re-balance it.

Talk about stirring up a s### storm! Why don't you just ask about using teflon tape on your drain plugs? Best windscreen? How does a motorcycle turn? Democrat or Republican?

You didn't use dynabeads, so your numbers are invalid.

Hey Doc - Thanks for the Physics lesson. Makes sense. But while we're on the subject of Dynabeads...I'd use 'em if I could get a qualified opinion that they actually work. What say you? This is NOT a set up. My inquiring, but vacuous, mind really does want to know. j

I can personally testify that when the read wheel of a Uly is out of balance, it will shake like hell at 75 MPH all the way to Springfield, IL and back.

Hey Doc, have you thought about building a time machine out of a DeLorean?

Good info.

My local Harley dealer just mounted a new tire on my rear rim for me. When I got it home, I noticed 9 (count them, 9) weights on the rim. And then I saw that the "Tech" had mounted the tire with the mfg. little dot (indicating, so I understand, the heavy part of the tire) adjacent to the valve, rather than across from it. So all the weight was on one side, hence the string of tire weights. But what do you expect from $78/hour service?

Next purchase, tire irons,

I recently put a new back tire on my Uly and decided to take it for a spin before balancing the wheel to see if I could notice any vibration. None at all at speeds to 100+.
Just finished a 500 or so mile ride and I've decided it would be a waste of time to take it back off and balance the thing. Maybe it's already pretty close as I'd lined up the low and high weight points of the wheel and tire when I mounted it. But things are smooth as can be on my bike.

(indicating, so I understand, the heavy part of the tire)

I believe the mark on the tire is the light spot, not the heaviest.
(I hope)
