I just got to work and put my kickstand down and when I got off of the bike it fell over and there the kick stand is laying on the ground. One bolt was sheared off flush and the it looks like the other one must have vibrated out partially and bent and broke with part of the bolt in the hole still. The fix should be as easy as a drill and ease out, but the question is can... Can I ride it home? I cant remember if there is a switch on the kick stand that keeps you from riding with it down. Thanks

Nope, no switch, so you should be fine. Bolts go into the bottom of the engine case so be careful when you drill it out.

Thanks, I am going to try and get the dealer to fix it under warranty. I work 30 miles from home and was just worried I would have hell getting home at 0500! Thanks a lot

This is a good reminder for all of us to check our stands often. Hopefully not much if any damage from the fall.

No real damage just some scratches on the saddle bag. I hope the dealer can fix it while I am sleeping tomorrow. Looks like a pretty easy fix, I just have to get some sleep

I remember taking my 06 to the dealer for a recall that had to do with the kickstand.
I see Treys has an 07.
Was the recall rolled into the 07 model?

Yea, I think the recall was 06's only.

Something to check on the sidestands . . .

While over in Pennsylvania recently the small circlip fell off my sidestand.

Best description I can think of is that the sidestand shaft is secured to it's mount with a pin that passes through the hole in the sidestand.

At the end of that pin it is secured with a tiny circlip.

The circlip came off and the pin came partially out.

It was an easy (thanks to Toona who did it in about 45 seconds) fix with a new circlip from a hardware store.

Just something to check periodically.

My local dealers found that my '08 stand mounting plate had sheared one of the bolts right off when it was in for unrelated service.
I didn't notice anything weird at the time and I never use the stand for anything other than holding the bike up.

I never climb aboard it like shorter people sometimes do and I hold the bike upright while my passenger climbs aboard.

This type of stuff freaks me out.
My 2000 X1 stand has never been off of the bike once in 84,000 miles.
My 1979 sportster: the same.

Why is such a simple thing like this so fragile now?

Update:
I just got all paranoid and went out in the parking lot at work and looked at my bolts+circlip.

All present and accounted for : )

For once I had good luck. My dealer , Mancuso HD here in Houston, got the bike fixed and I rode it to work tonight. I have to give them cudos for taking care of me and they did it under warranty! Now all I have to do is make it through this last night shift and I am off to meet up with Dave Barr and escort him and his crew to Houston!

How the heck did you do that?
Must be some kinda doufuss or something.
(they do look silly on their sides, don't they)
Note the position of the stander, and realize the clutch guard saved its own arse swinging out of the way leaving Joules with no clutch, at over 12,000 feet and Engineers Pass outside of Ouray, CO. Not to worry, I bought a spare front brake and clutch lever months before... and promptly left them home.

Oh, and soon after righting Joules and starting down the mountain, it started snowing.

I got home Friday night and put the bike on the side stand. It leaned WAY over. One of the mounting bolts had backed completely out and the other was pretty loose. Everything tightened up OK. What are some other areas that are prone to loosening on the Uly?

Panhead is right - you ain't done yet. Mine came loose up in the Yukon - had to tighten it every 500 mi thereafter, till I got home. For some reason they tend to continue to loosen - suspect ya just cant get enough torque on the bolts with the emergency kit box end wrench. Blew the rear shock as well so had dealer fix both under warranty. They had to replace bolts and use Gorilla strength locktite. No problems in last 10K mi.

Back in '06 there was a lot of discussion about this, the Recall and the new pivot-pin stand was supposed to be the fix. That was a good thing but more than one of us suggested that the mounting plate design was bad especially considering the Uly's height.

Wasn't it 2008 that the plate was redesigned with a third bolt? Is there enough material on the older cases to adapt the improved plate? That's something I would definitely consider when I first drop the engine someday.

My Uly hit the ground for the first time last week when my landlord backed his damned trailer into it in the driveway, snapped the stand leg off at the pivot.

Since the bike fell over softly onto a stack of plastic lattice I lucked out with no damages other than a tweaked stand assembly and scratches on the belt guard and rear wheel, but now I'm concerned the plate bolts were stressed.

To ride down hill from 12,000 to 8,000 mostly gravity powers you, neutral works, or coasting along in 2nd. For getting into town, speed shifting is possible. But there were times I had to clutch, when climbing Jeeps were coming up hill and intersections. I had vice grips locked on the clutch cable and was able to get some leverage to shift.

Good thing you had a vice grip or that would have been tough getting down jammer.
Thats the first thing I stuff in my tool bags.
