I was rolling home to Billings after a trip to Westfest in Buena Vista, CO last week. A few miles south of Chugwater, it went into skip spark, then died sixty seconds later. Weather was warm and windy as hell. Let it cool down and tried the key - dead. Checked the fuse box and the 15 amp ignition fuse was blown. Replaced it & it started right up. Put it in gear, hit the throttle, and it died. Fuse blown again. Put in the 10 amp & it started. Put it in gear - it dies, however, now it just dies, the fuse does not blow. ?????????
Long story short, was towed into Cheyenne just as the HD dealer had closed. Spent the night in a motel across the street and found out the next morning that the dealer would not work on Buells - maybe he'd take a look at it if it had not been Sturgis Bike Week and his shop wasn't full of hogs. Had to rent a truck and drive home to drop it off at the local dealer, whose shop is also full of Sturgis bound/going home hogs. Maybe they'll get to it later this week.
Any thoughts as to what's wrong? Fluids were good and connections (at least the ones that I could see) were clean & tight.
Had a voltmeter attached for the past month and it reads everything's OK with the battery & charging system.
It's an 09 XT with 6k miles. The bike has run flawlessly since the day I got it.

You have a shorted wire somewhere, but it's hard to say where. It could also be a bad relay. The easiest trouble shooting step would be swapping the aux and ign relays in the fuse box. Beyond that, a visual inspection of wires might show you something worn through.

I blew that fuse on my '08 XT when I had a bad main ground at the frame by the battery. I seem to remember that you have already checked your grounds though...

The fuses no longer blow, but it runs on one cylinder and dies when I put it in gear and let out the clutch. The check engine light comes on a few seconds after it's started.

Ahhh, interesting. Do you smell gas at the exhaust? If so, you have fuel but no spark. Start at the spark plug on the cylinder that doesn't fire (that header will be cold) and work your way back. You might have a plug wire worn through.

my fuse blowing fun was due to shorted wires in the fuel tank. Maybe check the wires around the ECM? Sounds like maybe one coil is out/shorted....Vern has done some extensive documenting on wiring issues.

Plenty of gas smell, and no doubt that it's running on one cylinder.
Would have to wonder why a plug wire would blow an igntion fuse only when the bike was put into gear. Or not, as is the case now.
Should be hearing from the dealer in the next day or two when they pull the error codes.
Thanks to all for the info.

Today's answer: because the coil fried.

Next question, WTF caused that??????

Went through 2 coils (melted onto the rocker box) on my bagger before someone figured out the brain was having a nervous breakdown and continuously firing the coil. Put in a new brain (actually a bench test unit one of the mech's had in his toolbox, I got lucky) and not a problem since.

It's running well now, but I've only clocked about a 100 miles since the new coil was installed. How long did your second coil last before it fried?
