I can't believe it took me almost a year to figure out how to get better mileage out of my Uly XT. GET IT DIRTY!

I always wanted to get out on some forest roads, but never had the opportunity until now. I realize that even though I have an XT it loves the dirt, sand and mud! The mileage showed as well. It's as if it was smiling the whole way!

This photo was taken about 10 miles east of Itasca State Park, the headwaters of the Mississippi!

Nice rain packed sand was a great way to get my first experience off road. Please don't flame me for not taking this wonderful bike off the tar. This is by no means off-road like the true 12x guys experience every weekend but it is a start.

If you too own an XT and wonder how it does off the tar, just go do it. Find a nice minimum maintenance road to learn on. You will get the feel for the tires quickly and know your limits.

Have fun!

Be sure not to miss 113 between Waubun and Itasca State Park. It's a great 40 mile run that is filled with 40-50mph corners!

Halfway through that run is a rest stop on the North end of Bad Medicine lake. Grab a photo and a slug of gatorade and go drag-a-bag through the the half of the ride!

I was not joking when I said I got better mileage on that run. I posted 44.5mpg which is a personal best on my 08xt.

Of course the weather has been so perfect for riding, the wife and I put on another 225 miles last night. With her on the back we pulled 40mpg.

If you are serious about riding trails though, check the local sled club. The Forest Riders Snowmobile Club trails are not all grant-in-aid trails. Many are posted ATV trails in the summer that a person with a Dual-sport bike could navigate easily. I will stick to the forest roads for now. It was way too much fun and a beautiful drive!

Be sure to find your way over to Dorset. There are more restaraunts per capita than any other city. Just North of Dorset is Zhateau Zorbaz which is the old Chateau Paulette where Lawrence Welk used to play!

A little bit of bridge construction, but worth the stop as Zorbaz Zuper Macho Nachos or Zorbaritas are perfect anytime.

Have fun on your trip!!

Thanks for the info Biff,we're riding from southern MN and hitting as many state parks and forests as we can along the way.
Some of those snowmobile trails get boggy and deep in the summer so the Uly may stay on the logging and forest roads.

Hi Mark. Looks like you are from Fargo.
Have you heard of this?

It is not too far from fargo. This will be my second year attending. It is great fun and it would be cool to have another Buell competing.

A road rally looks like a blast! I can't say that I have ever competed in one before. I would guess it would be best with a navigator that can hold a map at speed?

My wife was watching my GPS over my shoulder last night. We use Blueant Communicators, so having a conversation at speed was fairly easy when using full face helmets.

We may have to look into one of those!
