With that cheap mild steel muffler on your otherwise stellar Ulysses "ADVENTURE" motorycle? You've had plenty of years now to fix that crappy thing and yet you keep us bit.ching about it. We love ya man, but quit being such a rich tightass. I mean, and there can be absolutely no argument that nothing should wear out on the ULY because of corrosion. This ain't no 70's Honda rust bucket car, this is a signature Buell adventure motorcycle. 20 years from now I should be able to just wipe the dirt off a SS muffler and it should look as good a new because certainly the rest of the ULY is up to that standard of quality, at least mine is. Except for that pile of crap muffler that somehow keeps leaving East Troy on our beloved Ulysses. Enough is enough. Explain to us why you allow such a flaw to be engineered into your best selling motorcycle year after freaking year.

I believe he's previously stated that it's actually a much more expensive muffler than used by other manufacturers. The fact that it's able to support the bike's weight shows it's stoutness. Granted the paint is poor and whatever finish is used needs to be much more durable. Who knows? Maybe they changed their painting process or material this year and we'll find that that problem has been cured too.

Hugh,
It would be even more expensive if it was made out of aluminum but it would fall apart even sooner from corrosion so price is no excuse. They should have left the heated grips off the bike and used that money to pay for SS.

I agree with electroglider. Buell should be contacting JetHot and have a discount for us XB owners. Then both companies win.

I'm painting mine as soon as I can save up the $9.00.

I don't like the looks of it . . . but frankly it's WAY low on my list of things to worry about.

I'd be all for doing the stainless steel and tacking the $200 on the price of the bike. It's still thousands cheaper than the GS and well worth the price.

That's one of the many reasons that mine has a race kit.

+1 EG...there is simply no excuse this far down the road. There are plenty of top notch coating that could be used to solve this is the SS adds to much to the MSRP.

I've had a Race muffler for some time on my '06 and the finish on it seems to do quite well in comparison to the stocker.

Love the Elves and apparently they are quite a talented bunch, but I wonder how come it takes them so long to incorporate obvious improvements/solutions that us dirt bags seem to be able to hobble together solutions on our own. The "new" fan shroud took 3+ years to design and bring to market....I don't think so.

my muffler started rusting also so I put the Buell race kit on it. I couldn't have a nice looking motorcycle with a rusty muffler.

I also think BMC should offer a stainless steel muffler option for a upgrade, it would be well worth the money.

My race can is rusting, even they aren't immune.

It's more of a head scratcher than anything for me. As many have noted other brands don't seem to have a problem with this.

Oh, well....I love the bike, very low priority

It is time for annony to chime in and say that a rustproof muffler will cause turbulence in the exhaust system and freeze the fuel rail and stop the fan from heating the rear shock.

Well I just can't decide which muffler I like best...I keep switching between the stock, race (ceramic coated black), and my drummer. Every time I take one off I repaint it...so all three of mine seem to be holding up fine. I guess we all have our problems!

Its metal, it will rust eventually. The race pipe and most aftermarket pipes will hold up better in the long run. Hell my Micron full system has some rust on the headers.

There are different types of SS. Some are magnetic and will rust and others won't. At the very least they could offer a SS or Ti one in parts and accessories. When mine gives up the ghost, I'd sure hate to replace it with the same pos.

I'm not hating here. BMC put 2 mufflers on mine. How much did that cost?

Cout, I'm saving up for new clamps/straps along with the paint. The dealer re-used the old clamps when they swapped the muffler.

I really see nothing wrong with the rusty crap on the muffler.
At least it's not like an old jap bike where the muffler is flimsy stamped thin stuff that rusts THROUGH with actual holes in a couple of years.
I just wonder what that crappy black paint is that they put on there at the beginning.
Why bother painting it at all?
At least the mounting straps are SS and so are the headers.

The muffler is the Achilles heal of the Ulysses.(Sorry, I couldn't help the Homer humor.) It's the rustiest muffler in the industry. That includes Chinese mopeds. Ouch!

You should see the exhaust on my KLR-250, or KDX-200. They were both every bit as rusty, and live in a far less debris prone place.

I guess I'm glad something so easy to repaint takes all those hits for the rest of the bike.

I do my best work with black BBQ paint! : )

(and if you ain't in the big bright city like Court, its about $4, not $9...)

I'm really kind of surprised that an aftermarket company has not designed a titanium cover for the muffler. I have never cut one of these open, but rolling a tube, and tig welding a couple of caps on can't be all that spendy.

Maybe they're busy working through the inventory...maybe they have a supply of 10,000 more to install before they can move on.

My Drummer's rusting too.

It's an exhaust.

I don't give a s**t.

It's an *exhaust*. It works fine, it doesn't rattle, it doesn't have holes in it. If I can see the rust...I just have to come home through the watershed, and put more mud on it. "Problem" solved.

sigh...
