I bought my '06 Uly brand new in February of this year. As such, I'm still under warranty until Feb of 2011. My muffler is rusting all over the place after less than 3000 miles. I took it to my dealer and they said "It's a stainless steel muffler and the rust is considered normal wear and tear." I know it's not stainless steel and I've read of multiple people on BadWeb having theirs replaced under warranty. When the dealer told me that over the phone, I knew they were wrong but I didn't want to get into an argument without facts so I figured I'd talk to all of you first. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should say to my dealer? Court?...I've heard you can help in these matters...is that true? Thanks everyone. I just had mine replaced under warranty - '07. They tried to discourage me at first, saying the new one would rust as well...but then relented. I took the new muff and had it ceramic coated here locally - so maybe it'll last for awhile. At the very least, I'd get the new one painted properly, per Odie's recommendations. . | ||

I too was informed my 08' muffler is only surface rust - not rusted thru (no holes) so no warranty fix. Got 8 mos of warranty left for holes to develop. I'm kinda getting to like the orange color - enhances visibility - but only from the underside. | ||

Some dealers seem to cover muffler rust (one way to "cover" it is to remove and paint the muffler by the way) and some don't. I don't much care for the looks of the rust on mine but it doesn't bother me enough to stop riding. I'll probably take it off next winter and repaint it. My logic is that replacing a muffler that rusted in 2,000 miles with one that's going to do the same thing is a waste of my time. Like I said in another post . . . I'd prefer to see them do it in stainless and simply tack the $200 on the price of the bike. | ||

When I first noticed rust starting to appear on my muffler, it was only a couple of small spots. I wiped my muffler down with break-free, a synthetic lubricant and preservative used primarily on firearms. I am no stranger to riding in the rain and so far, no more rust and I've had the bike for two years and the muffler looks brand new. One more thing, break free doesn't stink when the metal gets hot and one application will last for several weeks. | ||

I called buell customer service and they were awesome. They talked to the dealer directly and agreed to replace it. I told them that once the new one comes in, I'll come pick it up, get it coated on my dime, and give it back to them to reinstall on the bike. Of course, the new one won't be covered under warranty because coating it is considered a modification....fine by me! For sure customer service is the way to go to get dealer 'issues' resolved. | ||
