My Uly was parked sticking out from an overhang during some rain the other day. When packing to leave I noticed the voids behind the latches (top bag) were almost full of water but the interior of the bag was dry. Has anyone else noticed this? I'm considering drilling weep holes or filling the voids. Opinions??? Cheers, Will | ||

Sounds like an easy/good idea. My lefty leaks in the rain if it's parked. Seems to pool up on top of the latch and get in from there. | ||

Yes. It causes ZERO problems in that it gets nothing in the bags wet. If you, however, drill a hole (and you have to do it in each of those casting reinforcement voids, all bets are off. When mine get a bit of water in them . . . and when it bother me . . . I stick the end of a towel in and wick the water up in seconds. If I were feeling REALLY anal . . . I'd install a piece of cotton rope in each void. Another great solution (I learned by accident when I mounted TIR3 strobes on my top case) is black gaffers tape. I didn't want to drill the bags up so I drilled ONE hole and got a good fitting grommet. Ran the wire in and trained it across the tops of the voids. Then I took black gaffers tape and neatly ran it along the length of the wire. It's invisible (for the most part . . . I went for function not concours competition) and it covers the voids. Downside . . .cover those voids and guess where that water is going to go? | ||

What's equally weird IMO is that although no water seems to get in the bags it does find a way to "sweat" out. Two days after there are still tiny drops on the outside around the latches even though I wipe them off before each ride. Cheers, Will | ||

If I were feeling REALLY anal . . . I'd install a piece of cotton rope in each void. Court, I hoping that don't start feeling really anal and just continue to ride and take lots of pictures of your journey.  | ||

I fully understand, from my own vehicle experience and buddies in the Porsche Club, the "not one spec of rust" mindset. But the Ulysses, at least mine, is a riding motorcycle. My goal is, like my S2, to have it in a condition that will allow me at anytime to start it, ride it for 16 hours and do it day after day. All I want of my Ulysses (you may note that neither Erik's nor mine seem to get washed) to do it . .. get me there. The bags work perfectly. Don, we missed you last weekend! I almost rode through your area on Saturday but got lost in Harriman state park. Getting ready to do a little "gun run" to shake out a couple new Buell items, I'll drop you a note and see if you're interested in a couple days of intense riding. I'm a sicko! | ||

The Outdoorsman are the best bags I have ever had on ANY bike. They seem to do everything well, look nice and well . . just work. I realize that one of the main design considerations was a narrower profile than the Journeys, but I would love the look and non-breaking latchiness of the Outdoorsmen with the capacity of the Journeys. |
