If I buy a Uly it will be used. I was only considering the 08-newer models because I thought I read somewhere that the seat height was lower on the 08-newer plus the heavier forks, heavier rims and standard heated grips.

At only 5'7" with a 30" inseam the seat height on the X (09 model) is about at my maximum. I sat on a X and an XT at the dealer and didn't have any problem with either one just sitting on the showroom floor. I'd prefer the X model because of the extra ground clearance and travel - want to go anywhere my buddy on his R1200GS-A can go (he is limited by rider ability, so I think me on a Uly could go anywhere he was able to on the BMW).

How does the XT do offroad compared to the X?

If the seat height of the X's are the same from year to year I'd consider an 06 or 07 and could save some money that way. Are the heavier duty forks and wheels that much better on the 08-newer bikes?

Is there a model year that is best and/or one to stay away from?

Thanks for all your help.

SG- All the X model Ulys have the heavier rims. 08-up have the bigger forks with different triple clamps and an offset axle to allow much more turning lock. I don't think the larger diameter of the forks provided much of an advantage but the other changes allow the bike to be turned much tighter for parking lot maneuvering or off-road.

The 06 Uly came with a standard "tall" seat. Later they offered a "low" seat as an accessory. All 07-up Ulys some with a third seat which is approximately the same height as the low seat, but this seat has slightly different construction and padding. All the seats are easily interchangeable on any year Uly.

I have the same inseam measurement as you and the height doesn't give me a problem most of the time. Two-up is a pretty big challenge though, and I'd probably have bought an XT if they had been available when I bought my bike.

All the years are good bikes. The 08-up Ulys have some significant improvements which may or may not be worth the increased price you're apt to pay. Here's a link to a listing of model year differences:

Thanks again Hugh.

After posting my questions, I found the New Owner Information Section - Lots of good tips there!
