Hey Uly Guys - I did an archives search, and it appears there is an updated part available. Good thing, because one of my latches broke for no reason, and I want to fix it before my trip next month!

Is this available through the dealer? Does anyone have the part number?

Thanks,

(Notice the nice blue bungee cord)

Yep from your favorite dealer. I recommend getting two so you have a spare or do preventative maintenance on the other side.

Speaking of latches breaking, my second original latch broke in May of this year, one month after* the warranty expired on my '07 Uly. I got charged forty something bucks to get it replaced.

I thought I'd read about HD/Buell picking up the cost of fixing these obviously badly designed latches even after the warranty period?

Should I make a fuss about it? Was this something my dealer should have fought for?

Thanks

* it broke in early May, but I didn't get around to dropping it off for repair until June...

Atoms - Bummer! I'm going to install myself and save a few bucks.

Froggy - any tricks to the install? I haven't really looked at it yet, but it seems like it should be easy...

Coops,
If you could perhaps take some closeups of the pair (the old one and the new one) and post them here I'm sure I'm not the only one who would be grateful to see the difference - if any is visible.

Atoms, personally I wouldn't fight it over $40, there are bigger fish to fry. Never know, fuel pump could burn out tomorrow (easy $700).

Coops, no tricks that I know, I never done it, I have destroyed everything on my bags except for the latch.

Atoms, there is old pics showing the difference, its a thicker plastic.

Sure Atom, will do. Happy to put the macro setting on my new Rebel XS to good use! I'll be at least 3 days from order date (this upcoming Sat) to pick them up at Old Glory. Hope to have pics sometime next week.

Thanks Froggy - Maybe I will do an install write-up for the KV as well!

Install is as easy as pie. Just take the old one off in a minute and the new one goes on in a minute the same way.

If you can change a light bulb, you can do the repair. Both of my original latches failed. So far so good with the replacements. The new latches appear to be identical to the old. They are supposed to be stronger than the originals. How? I don't know- stronger plastic? wire re-enforcement? same old sh*t? I'm assuming the latter and carrying a spare.

There are tons of photos here and I've got a collection box of broken latches, no need for more unless you have the time.

The latch replacement takes less than 5 minutes. If you want to drop me a note with your name, VIN and the name of your dealer I can have one waiting for you pronto.

Drop me a NOTE with:

  • Your name
  • Your contact info
  • VIN
  • Name of Dealer
  • Dealer Contact
  • Dealer Contact Info

Easy and quick fix.

Latch replacement is rated as a zero hammer job. It's so easy that I believe you could have the passenger do it while rolling down the interstate. I'm being a bit flippant, I know, but it is that easy -- I've replaced both sides twice. I can only blame the original latches for the first two failures. Big feet broke one (me) and little feet (wife) broke the other.

Outstanding news on the install. I'm a big fan of easy fixes.

Court - Thanks! I will take you up on your offer, and shoot you a PM tomorrow. Need to figure out who the dealer contact is!

Coops, did you have to do a lot of modification to get the brackets for the Journey saddlebags to work on your motorcycle? Looks like a nice set-up on the bike.

I have the saddlebags on my Uly and have had them for over three years now with no problems. I'm constantly over-loading therm. I damn near tipped my motorcycle over the other day when I was cramming my jacket into a fully loaded side bag, but I was able to catch it before it went completely over.

>>> Need to figure out who the dealer contact is!

Don't knock yourself out . . . I can handle it without a name. Sometimes the name just saves going through the "press "1" for English" drill.

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Do I mention the seemingly poor design of the "decklehalters"?
I just broke another pair today and this set was made of picture wire.
I need something better. Where can a person get piano wire and does it twist?

Lastcyclone go to a bicycle shop and get a brake cable and the hardware store for some good crimps.

I used stainless stranded cable from Ace Hardware with aluminum crimps, works great. They're springy and roll up nicely when you close the lid, but the orientation of the crimp is important when you snap the loops around the rivet washers. Reverse the loops and the cable has a tendency to roll down and get caught in the lid.

I hate to keep dragging this thread off on tangents, but given how easy it is to replace a latch, could the same thing be done to match locks?
I ask because I'm getting an OEM topcase and rack soon from a private individual. I'm assuming the top case has a lock. I'm pretty sure that the key I have for my sidecases won't work on the top case.
Can I just order a latch using the three digit key code on my existing side-case key and get a new latch with a matching lock for my new (to me) top case?

Any locksmith can change the pins in the lock to match the side cases.
We have an assortment of pins here at the new car dealership we use to build and match locks.

Court - PM sent!

Cyclonedon - The brackets came ready to rock for the XB9S straight from H&B. The hardest part of the install was translating from German. Fortunately, there were pictures. I picked them up at eurotechmotorsports.com for $279, got the Uly bags used from a badwebber for $200, IIRC.

Thanks Ron, rwven.
How do you attach the eye to eye with the rivets already in place?
Would the loop to loop work too?

Lastcyclone,
I'm going to use 3/16 aluminum rivets with backup washers. I haven't installed mine yet, but I don't forsee a problem. I'll try to get it done this week and post some pics.
