Recently the tach on my Uly has been jumping around and acting very erratic when the bike is cold for the first 5-10 minutes. After warming up it seems to be fine. Anybody else ever had this problem? It's an '06. |

My tach was acting up like that for a few months, an '06 also. Mostly when hot though. It was at the end of my warranty and the tech at a local dealer gave up on it, asked me to try to narrow down when it was doing it. They were going to order a new instrument cluster and try that. Never heard back from them besides I isolated the problem myself. Happened on demand when I would yank the bars to the right against the stop. At the time I still had the old-style Wire Harness Guide Part #C0047.1AD:
This piece really pinches the harness and resulted in my tach wire (pink) breaking within the insulation, not visible from the outside. I tossed that guide and fixed the break, all good now. Some people replace the guide with the new part #Y1000.2AK, it's less restrictive and more controlling of the harness but I left mine free to move with the bars. |

well, now the bike has an erratic tach when its warm too! went out for a 120 mile ride last night and it was doing it on and off the whole time I hate it when there is no way to isolate the problem. If I take it in, it'll probably work perfect when I get it to the dealer....the way that sort of thing usually works out |

Not to resurrect an old thread or anything, but I found the problem for causing the erratic tach: The pink sending wire going from the ECM to the tach was rubbing on the battery strap bracket under the seat. After rerouting the wire and put some electrical tape over the exposed wire, it works great now! When I had it in to the dealer last week they diagnosed it as a faulty tachometer. Before I let them replace it, I took the bike home and looked at it myself first...glad I did! |
