I've already searched the site, but still have some questions. I'm noticing some dark residue/oil at the base of the rear cylinder on the left side. Is some leaking around the base gasket acceptable or is this something I need to deal with right away? Thanks! - Scott |

Scott- it's not going to hurt anything. I'd just keep an eye on it, and if it gets to the point where you're losing too much oil for your peace of mind, fix it. Keep in mind a little oil can make a big spot. Supposedly, letting the bike warm up thoroughly before riding it hard is the best way to prevent base gasket leaks. |

From a former Shovelhead owner, a little oil on the outside just keeps it from rusting. |

Staves, You fix that with a toothbrush and some solvent. |

Thanks - I appreciate the responses. I definitely let the bike warm up for a few minutes before each ride. Good to know it's nothing to stress over. |
