I have noticed some discoloration of my headers since I had my bike. This week, it there was an area that looked like it was scratched. I took a look at the scratched area and it looks almost like a weld but it's sort of bubbled. Is this a potential defect in the pipes? I've noted that my bike was seeming to run hotter than I remember when I was having problems with my cam sensor. Could the engine run extra hot because of a bad sensor, so hot that it would damage the header? Thanks. | ||

Headers can get cherry red and still survive. Not surprising that you have discoloration or finish issue on the stock Buell headers. Unlikely that the header finish issue you are experiencing is related to the engine running hot/lean. Factory ECM set-up is decidedly lean and unless your timing was changed when the cam sensor was replaced you are probably fine. How is the motor running? IF you are real concerned about hot/lean condition then pull a spark plug and check it for lean condition. If you want headers that don't discolor then Jet Hot coating or something similar is the way to go. | ||

I had Jet Hot coat my headers for that reason; note that you have to rotate the engine to remove them... --Doc  | ||

John- if turnaround time is a concern, you can buy pre-coated headers from American Sport Bike on an exchange basis. | ||

Did mine in the standard sterling......high quality finish! Turn around was like a week. |
