Stopped by the gas station and filled up my Uly yesterday and drove over to Home Depot to get a few things. I came out of the store 15 minutes later and noticed a 12" dia. puddle of gas under my Uly. The gas had expanded in the tank (warm day) and had come out the overflow pipe. No big deal except the pipe is right next to the helmet lock! Yup, the gas went all over my helmet, soaked the chin strap and I was huffing fumes the whole ride home! Moral of the story...don't fill your tank to the top on a warm day and then park it!

It seems the low fuel light on the first couple of tanks on my ULY came on during my ride home from work. My gas station is 1 mile from the house and I filled up in the evening.

1st time really freaked out the wife as she went into the garage to find fumes and the same puddle under the bike. I did it once more not thinking, now I ride on home and fill up prior to going to work in the morning.

Cheers, Will

Funny, I did the same thing for the first time on my way to March Badness when meeting in Maryville for breakfast with a bunch of BadWeB'ers. Not good!

Helmet lock holds the helmet like maple syrup bucket on a tree.....right under the spout!

Oddly enough, I can't remember if it killed any brain cells.

It would have only killed the weakest brain cells anyway.

Yes, gas fumes are hard on brain cells, but they are also fatal to styrofoam cells as well. I hope you trash that helmet...

Thx for sharing. I've had a similar result after filling up on the way home from work (the gas station is about 1 mile from home) and then directly parking it in the garage. Wife has gotten upset with the gas smell. I didn't have the puddling though.

+1 on the helmet replacement.
There was a long thread that was titled something like -- "When to replace your helmet" or it was my "Smelly helmet/cleaning". Anyway, within the post people talked about the helmet deteriorating due the petroleum products that are kept in the garage (oils, greases, gas, ect..). Besides I bet you would never be able to get that smell out of the chin strap.

I thought it would be toast because of the gas to styrofoam mix. I took the helmet apart to check that, other than a little brown stain there was no disintegrating of the foam. Must have been a small enough quantity to just stink it up.

All I think that are left are the weakest brain cells. But they get good gas mileage!

One time I would ride without a helmet. Huffing can turn you into a squid.

Gas and EPS do NOT mix well, but it does make for a good joke occasionally...

Have someone put a few ounces of gas in a styrofoam cup, and bring it to you. The cup will usually last through the filling process and about 4 steps before the bottom comes out.

Not to mention, if you helmet is fiberglass, gas will attack that as well.

Doh, that happened to Kdan on his xb9s last time we went riding. He left his helmet hanging on the passenger peg, and the overflow tube poured gas directly into it.
