Went camping in scotland last weekend and realised that the boxes arent waterproof, are they supposed to be? i noticed it doesnt say that they are in the parts catalogue but it does say that the other ones are. What do you do to yours to keep the water out when its raining? |

My 08XT bags stay dry, But I always carry the large plastic lawn bags. I usually carry 4, just because you never know what you need to strap on. I've been in some pretty hard rains, and so far, the bags have been dry. |

Mine can stay dry or leak, it just depends on how stuffed they are. If you fill them up too much so that they don't close all the way to seal correctly they will leak. When I pack mine for camping I loop a bungee cord around each case handle and around the sissy handles of the bike. This helps. I believe Strada sells pretty straps for this if you don't want different color bungees hanging off your bike. |

One of the reasons I went to Ortliebs. |

I collect the bags for air mattresses and put my stuff in them. |

Mine stay dry, but one side (sorry can't remember which) puddles water in the latch and makes a mess if I open the bag without paying attention. Regardless, my sleeping bag goes in a waterproof compression bag, electronics go in ziplock freezer bags, and the rest of the stuff, well, I don't care if it gets wet. |

The bag on the downside. |

Yeah, the bag on the downside. By which I mean the bag on the stand side. Mine stood in the rain overnight - the stand side bag had a big puddle inside, the one on the other side was bone dry. Something to do with the angle of the latching area is my guess. |

I only know because I stopped to put on some rain gear when it was pouring the other day, and dumped water into the bag. |

My left side bag leaks if it is parked in the rain but not if I'm plowing through it. It's not just pooling from the latch as I had previously thought though. I deliberately pulled the bag off of the bike before opening it and there was still some in there. I can't figure out how it's getting in since the seals look nice. |

The crazy thing is that some leak, and some don't. The bags on my '06 Uly were water tight, even in torrential downpours; the left bag on my XT lets in water, in even a light rain. I just put my clothes in 1 gallon Ziplock bags, and don't worry about it. |

I was thinking of putting talcum powder on the seals to see if it would show up at least where it was getting through. I was also thinking of perhaps greasing the seals or something. |

The talcum powder is a great idea, it also stops chaffing!!! |

It was the left hand box on mine too while it was parked overnight. I was thinking its because it sits with the rain on the seal the whole time so must get through that way. Just have to put that one in the tent with me next time |

Mine leak too. I was thinking about seeing if I could get a new set under warranty. Do you think they would cover that type of thing? If the bags are supposed to be waterproof and they leak, they are faulty. |

I hated the Journeyman bags. Besides being large, they suck in just about every other way. The latch is a pathetic design prone to breakage and they don't seal worth a damn. H&B should have made the seals out of a hydrophilic rubber compound that expands when introduced to humidity or moisture. The Outdoorsman bags are a much better choice. Better latches. Better seals. Ability to swap out future H&B bags on the same hoops. |
