For anyone with the upgrade kit for a tall shield. Can the shield be removed without removing the flyscreen portion to access the back? Before I buy a kit I want to be sure or else I will make my own that can be changed without accessing the back of the flyscreen.

Rwc,
The lower mounts for the tall windshield have threaded fasteners that are accesable from the front. The top mounts are the plastic push pins as used on the "X". Installation and removal of the windshield can be accomplished without removing the flyscreen.

Not on my XT. The inside nuts are lockers and have to be secured in order to remove the screw that runs through a shim. This was an upgrade over the previous system.

Got what I said from the '08 Uly service manual. If there's an update, I wasn't aware of it. My bad!

Get a Palmer or Madstad mount, you'll be glad you did...

Thanks for the input, guess I'll get the kit then. Probably just as well, by the time I get done buying stainless fasteners I probably will have spent the same.

I recently got the Madstad system. I love it - the original screen on the XT was horrible for me. The Madstad system makes it much, much better. And I can take the windscreen off with 4 screws.

when the Ulysses first came out with the original windshield, it had just the push-pin installation method and I purchased the Buell tall windshield which had the push-pins, but there was a recall on that and when I took it in, the dealer removed the front panel and bolted the tall windshield to the front cover.

I have since switched to the Zero Gravity smoked colored tall screen which is the same height as the Buell tall screen. As far as wind protection, I'm 6' tall and with the high shields, the wind hits me right in the face.

I purchased a Cee Baileys 16" tall windshield complete with the front cover which directs the wind over my fact to directly on the top of my helmet which gives me a head ace when riding so I don't use that one unless it's winter time.

There are other options available but I haven't used them so I won't comment on those.

As far as the push-pin method, I liked that but I guess Buell had some problems with them flying off while riding at highway speeds so they decided to do a recall, but I never had that problem.

Mine just pops in and hasn't been a problem yet. Perhaps with continued remove/install cycles the pins get loose?

Three years, 39,000, lots of use hot and cold, I see no discernible change in the firmness of fit on the stock windshield pins. I have been amazed at times, especially when cold that they haven't broken off based on how hard they can be to pull and the noise made when they "pop" off.

I do run my entirely differently mounted B.A.W. for the coldest months though.

I have the Buell tall screen, and would love to be able to remove it like the original shorter version..It seems that the top of the screen needs to tilt forward a little to give proper air deflection..I just haven't found or seen any after market style that I like well..?

I agree that the easiest fix is tilting the tall shield forward at the top. It wont follow the lines of the bike but if you can get over that, you have a solid fix for most 6' and under riders.

I wasn't thrilled with the looks of the Palmer bracket at first. I think it looks great now. I know it works well...

I first bought the Buell +4" windshield, and still had a lot of noise and turbulence around my helmet. I then bought the Parabellum 28" windshield which is better, although huge/ugly, but was amazed that I still had a lot of turbulence around the helmet. I really think that putting some kind of fairing lowers to widen the faring and stop wind from coming in around the frame and up past the riders chest would make a big difference to all windshields. +1 on the Laminar Lip. It keeps the wind going up and over without beating me about the head & ears. Not the most attractive set up in the world, but it works (for me anyway).
My concern with the Madstad & Palmer rigs is the gap at the bottom of the shield feeding air up from underneath. I see that Palmer makes a small spoiler for that problem, but don't know if it helps or makes air flow turbulence worse.

Strada,

I'll be sending you some pics of my bike with the driving light kit and the windshield brackets. When you start powder coating the bar end weights I'll have to get a set of them also....;^)>

I put a set of Hella YellowStar lamps in my driving lights, I think it really ups my conspicuity.

The most recent recall fix for the tall windshield I just had done. It is no longer removable without taking the whole fly off. I hate that. Too many bugs leave their marks under there.
