Well. . not yet. But I wanted to have the thread ready for the first time I take the Ulysses out with the new Whelan TIR3 brake light.

This has UGLY written all over it.

I hit the brake last night, with the bike parked next to the house, and the neighbors came running out to see what was going on.

This should solve one of my problems . . . may create another.

: )

Just remember, you can't target fixate on what you can't stare at.

And pics? I keep toying with the idea, but I'm having a hard time deciding on where to mount it.

Hey Court, you will not have any issues with the TIR3's. I've had them mounted on the rear all year, even came to homecoming with them. I do not have them mounted in the typical 3 flash/left and right mode. I have them set for random flash. I have the blessing of all the LEO's. I made a bracket that mounts over the license plate lamp. I made it from Stainless steel, with a spacer (for the wiring). So far everyone backs off Really fast when you hit the brakes, and all I've heard is, "Geez, where did you get such BRIGHT lights". Mine flash all the time the brake light is on. By the way, they should be fused by themselves from the regular brake light.

Tim,

Court got me interested in the TIR3's when I mounted my bags. Are you using them for brake lights or just in sync with brake lights? Are you using the red or amber lenses?

TIA, Will

>>>I keep toying with the idea, but I'm having a hard time deciding on where to mount it.

I got over my "drill no holes" fear and mounted it right smack dab in the center of the rear of the top box.

This is a rough idea of where it's at. I **think** the key is going to be to select the "steady" display. If it "looks" like a simple brake light I don't think it will draw attention. I think if I go with a strobe pattern I'm asking for trouble.

I was going to put one each on the sidecases and synch them but that would be tempting fate.

Um....AFAIK, while *technically* flashing brake lights are not correct, you can't get an impersonation ticket for rear-facing lights, especially if they're only red. Front-facing? What size would you like your new bracelets, lol. But I think rear-facing you'll be OK. My S2 has the guts (complete with hyper-flash wig-wag pattern) of a Federal Signal Cuda Tri-Optic behind the lens. 2 normal S2 bulbs are run/stop, but the LED's are added for stop and flash side to side, something like 240fps. VERY effective : )

Clear lens with red lights. Activates with brake light. Right now I have the factory default program running.

I drilled small holes to mount the light. Then 3/4" holes in the internal brace webbing, installed with 8-32 SS hardware and Ny-Lok and then installed a 3/4" plastic snap plug to make the drilled hole invisible.

I ran 3/c, #18 (I cut the power cord from an old Dell computer) and ran a ground (green), tap to the brake light (black) and 12+VDC (white) tapped off the aux outlet.

The 12+VDC will be used as a local source for changing flash patterns. This way if I am headed into Chicago rush hour traffic and want to go with an "aggressive" flash pattern I have the ability to make quick changes. I am thinking of using the Buell Siren Switch (which I have, but have not installed) on the right control to do this.

In addition, while that 12+VDC sits idle back there, it will be connected to another TIR with CLEAR lights/lens, set to STEADY, which should be the truck light to end all trunk lights.

It will also allow me, if I were to be stranded on the side of the road at night (cough, cough . . wheel bearings) to put on a light show, that should warn oncoming traffic about 3 miles away, by simply opening the lid on the top box.

Make any sense ?

Will,
I've got the TIR3's mounted as brake lights only. I removed the license plate light, and mounted the stainless light bracket through the original holes. I then pulled the wires through the original wire hole, and fished the wires between the outter/inner rear fenders, and made the connection by the seat bracket (under the seat). Then I remounted the license plate light, the fuses are also right by the connections, so they are easy to see. They are awesome lights, I of course DID use the red lights. When they are off, the lenses are clear, with red high output LED's. I do not have access to a digital camera, or I would post pictures,(sorry). The TIR's are kind of spendy, but worth every penny, because they work! I mounted them without drilling any holes, or disturbing anything. It looks like a factory set up.

Added the Givi E450 and did the simple triple tail mount that Widowmaker showed in another post. Simple install and works great.

Added the brake light kit and it is simply fantastic for rear visibility. Have it wired in to my Back Off module which gives the two brakes lights 5 flashes.

Did a 700 mile Outer Banks tour last week and this setup performed perfectly.

I considered that.

But with the Outdoorsman luggage the stock tail light is virtually invisible to most vehicles to the rear with the exception of the Smart Car and the Mini Cooper.

This photo, although not the best, gives a sense of the angle from the side. You can see that the overhanging bag, in concert with a parade of semi trucks in NYC traffic, could be a problem.

One thing I would like to see on the Uly is some serrations on the sides of the taillight lens, to project the light off to the sides (for off-angle viewing).

I bought a G-MAX helmet not long ago that has a light in the back of it. I didn't like it there so I removed it from the helmet and installed it into the reflector on the back of my Uly top box. It aint the brightest thing out there but it has it's own power source, independent of the bike so no matter what, I have an emergency flasher. (and spare wheel bearings) That and it was free. Kinda. I'm using wafer type batteries in it rather than the AAA batteries it came with. It works well.

Hey Court, maybe you should move to East Troy, Wisconsin to ride your Uly since you still have your get-out-of-jail ticket for that town!

Good thinking!

You have a great memory . . . I'd forgotten that. When Vick and I got married some of the folks from Buell threw the "Full Court Press" party and they gave me a book of Buell business cards from the factory with messages written on the back. Included were some from old friends in and around East Troy and the local Policeman did the "Get out of Jail Free" on the back of his card!

I still haven't used it . . hope Rich hasn't retired! He very fairly tolerant (we had strict rules) with a lot of energetic test riders.

Sure would like to see some pics or a link to the website to get these lights. I have a problem with dipshit drivers in Nevada and anything can help here...especially at night!
