Have done a couple of searches and didn't turn up anything regarding a the starter spinning. It spins and sounds like its not engaging. This isn't the usual battery low and click-click-click, this is more like the gear spun off the end of the starter type thing. Just wondering if I'm the only one thats experienced this?

I know on a normal starter, that usually means the starter solenoid has gone out. the starter motor/solenoid are two different things. the starter turns as the power is applied, and at the same time the coil on the solenoid make the starter move out to engage the starter drive to the ring gear on the clutch hub. The starter may spin and the solenoid may not engage, or vice versa. I don't know if it's the same, but I imagine it is. good luck

I'd speculate that the starter drive assy is bad. These are a one-way "Sprague" clutch type drive unit that allows starter motor torque through the gear to the ring gear, and also allows the drive gear to "free wheel" or spin free when the engine starts to avoid damage from excessive over speed. If you can hear the starter motor running, the solenoid is most likely ok.

I'll have it apart sometime today. Not sure if I'll go through and try and find out whats bad about the starter, I might just put in the order for a new one.
thanks for the input guys

Check the ground strap that connects the engine to the frame. The connections can be found under the floor of the airbox.

I guess another possibility would be a broken primary chain, but hopefully you'd have noticed if that happened. If the primary chain is broken, the starter would just spin the clutch without turning the engine.
