Yes, another tire thread.

I'm about due for some new tires and am considering the Distanzias.

My wife and I use the Uly as our 2-up touring bike, primarily on paved roads with some gravel thrown in. We are often on multi day trips with full luggage. Is there any reason why the Avons would be a bad idea for our use?

I am primarily concerned about running the 160 rear 2-up and fully loaded.

Another option I'm considering is using the D616 rear and Distanzia front. My current D616 front has a little less than 4k on it and is starting to create a surprising amount of headshake.

I'm shying away from the syncs because of reports of punctures while riding on gravel.

Any thoughts will be appreciated!

I don't see how the Syncs are more vulnerable to punctures than others.

Actually, being the OEM tire, you are 10x are likely to hear ANYTHING about it, because all the bikes come with that tire from the factory.

Anyway, get a Rhinotire lined Sync if you are that worried. Also, how rough are the roads you tackling? Dual compound Diablo Strada's handle gravel fine, but turn into slicks the second they get a taste of mud.

We are traveling your basic dirt/gravel roads, nothing extreme. I've used the Stradas on dirt and the D616s were a definite improvement in that environment.

The info I've read about the Syncs indicates that they have a thinner carcass than say a D616, making it easier to puncture and harder to plug once you have a hole.

I'll have to check into the Rhinotire lined Synch option.

I had a Sync get punctured...then the plug would not hold any more than 25 psi. But that was with about 7,500 miles on the rear...which was about 1,000 miles past hitting the wear marker. So I'll take the hit for that one!

I currently use the Distanzia's and I really like them in the twisties and on your basic gravel road...but the Sync's were very good in those areas too. The Avon's are a little stickier than the Sync's...but they also wear about 20% faster (at least for me). The 160 size of the Distanzia's are no problem at all...other than not looking as cool as the 180 tires!

M2nc had the same thing happen on a Sync at Buelltoberfest last year. Riding FS roads with another Uly he punctured the rear Sync on a rock. He tried plugging it several times, but the plugs wouldn't hold for more than about 30 minutes. He later found that the tire was torn up inside from the puncture.

I think the Syncs are great tires, but they seem to be very thin in the grooved areas.

I wouldn't worry about the 150 rear. My last bike was a Honda Pacific Coast. It weighed nearly 200# more than the Uly and ran a 140 rear tire. I rode that 2 up regularly.

2-up the Distanzia's are fine. My biggest problem with them, is that any type of "sport" riding will kill them quickly. I roaches a new rear in 1000 miles down in the Smokey Mountains.

My first set of Distanzia's lasted 5k for the rear and the fron lasted 10k. Both had some life left, but they cupped funny and the edge's on the rear were peeling off.

A distanzia front with a D616 rear, might be the ticket for me.

Your profile shows that you have an 08 XT. Did you have issues with the Diablo Strada's? I have them on my bike and had 7500 miles before the rear suffered a major cut while in a construction zone. I replaced it with another. The front looks almost unused with 8900 miles.

Mileage varies. I just changed my Strada's at 5,500 mile. The cords were showing. The front still had some wear left but was beginning to cup.

I would stick with a 180 tire because the rim is designed for a 180.

I replaced the Sync's with Distanzia's. The front of Sync's wore out on the sides first. Lost the front end in gravel with no warning. The only thing I noticed about the 160 rear, is that the bike turns in quicker.

Nobuell, I never had any problems with the Stradas, in fact I have them on my Monster as well.

They are a great sport-touring tire IMHO. Just looking for something a little more dirt friendly. I noticed a considerable difference between the Stradas and D616s on gravel roads.

If my Uly was going to be a 'pavement only' bike I'd probably stick with the Stradas.
