At the end of a 4k mile trip this month I decided to jump ship. If you see my 08 Ulysses "Huckleberry" in the NE give it a salute. It is a good bike and never left me stranded. NUTS

Pushing the Uly too far out of its element. When I ride the Uly in the mountains at home, when it's cool o...pure bliss. Big miles, highway speeds, lots of gravel and summer temps all combined to lead me astray. NUTS

So NUTS - whatcha replacing it with ? Please don't say an Ultra Classic! My riding partner has a 1200GS - we've traded off on trips - nice machine and a bit more dirt road worthy, with its better gearing and tires - but the Uly fits me better. I ain't tradin. Good luck & happy trails with whatever you fall in love with next. j

I know he was thinking about one a while back.

I rode the Uly north from my home in Virginia, through ten states and three Canadian Provinces. It took me to Gaspe, Quebec, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and made it 500 miles from home. I traded the Uly away in Troy, New York and lounged the remaining 500 miles home on this.

And here's how I treat the new bike, first day out.

Hey NUTS, great bike. Had an 05 & 01 GS, just wanted something different, and XT was what chose me.
I'm shooting you a PM, got a few goodies I hope you need.

Enjoy

Yep - thats the one. The rear drive bearing failures were mostly on the early model 1200GS - they went to a 'lifetime' sealed unit and learned a lesson. Kinda like the Uly belt...it's lifetime is until it breaks. Nice machine - still not an "offroad" one - they are about 70# less than the 1150GS but still 70# more than the Uly, and higher center of gravity. GSA has an even lower 1st gear but the GS is still better than the Uly's. I like the hydraulic clutch too. Enjoy. j

You drove across a flooded road???

I don't want to sound like your mother, but when water washes over the top of a road it many times washes the road away beneath.

Phish: I got heated grips, info button on the bars and ABS that I have used 3 times already.

Glen: the yelloooooo jacket helps keep me from attending Emergency Depts due to people "not seeing" me. I get alot more waves too, dunno why.

Cleaver: that was a bridge and the sign said the bridge was officially out. We made it in fine style and I didn't worry a bit about the bearings.

Wolfy: no demo's as I'll be in Colorado. Gonna TAT it back with Pops. Finally, a big bike I can put knobbies on.

Love BMWs but the strive for technology makes them less reliable and stuff that is hard to fix by yourself. The rear shaft failures, electro gremlins on the single wire system but besides the shaft that bmw has not 'fixed' over the years, the rear oil-seal failure and clutch replacemnt scares the crap out of me.
I belong to BMW MOA, great club and great bikes but I love Ulys and airheads: )

Well...some one's got to take the lead in inovation - I appreciate what BMW has done to raise the bar. Like the F800GS - wait a few years for the model to evolve & work out the kinks, and it will be a fine machine. (it maybe my next one when the Uly wears out) Fortunatly the 1200 is on year 4 (or is it 5 now?) and they're getting better. Nuts - in the last 6 mos or so there was an extensive article in BMWMOA about rear drive failures. It's...you guessed it...the bearing (sound familiar?) Anyway, there were a couple of recommendations that might alleviate future suffering. j

Gotta join MOA Nuts, if nothing else but for Paul Glaves' and Matthew Parkhouse's tech articles.

Friend of my brother's sells BMW's, told me to go out and ride the rest and I'd be back to buy a GS.

Did what he suggested and a few days later came back, on my Uly... I think he was upset...

Congrats on your new bike!

Phish and XBimmer, thanks for the kind words.
Carlos, I was down the way yesterday. Rode to Stuart for a cup of coffee. 180 miles for a cup of coffee and a ride on Squirrel Spur.

The new bike has a warranty just like the Buell's I have bought. I am not afraid to use these devices and I'll give the GS the same benefit of doubt I gave my both my Uly's. They don't make a bike that I'd be interested in that doesn't have some "fatal flaw." NUTS

If that is the bridge I am thinking it is, that is pretty much how that thing is every time it rains or someone waters their lawn for an extra 10 minutes. It's a concrete roadway with a bunch of pieces of culvert running through it.

I send my condolences on the purchase of the Beemer, and I am truly sorry for your loss. I'm sure you will enjoy the GS.
I guess I have to wave at the Bimmers when I'm in your neck of the woods now...
