Just recently, within the last few hundred miles, my 07' XB12X has starting making a whining noise. The sound is similar to the tranny whine you get in your car when speed increases in reverse. Its basically the same sound with my bike. I can't tell if it is happening in 2nd-5th gear due to engine and wind noise. From what I can hear in 1st gear, the sounds gets louder with speed, not rpm.

Primary chain tension is good and the primary oil level is good. Could it be the wheel bearings? I haven't felt any unusual vibrations and the bearings only have minor surface rust forming. No other unusual noises.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Tony

Sounds like you've checked the obvious things. Definitely check the wheel bearings; the belt idler pulley are is another possibility.

Mine does it too in first, it has always done it, but its RPM related, like if I am coasting clutch in at like 30mph while in 1st, I wont hear it, but as I let out the clutch and the engine and everything spin back up I can hear it. I don't recall hearing it if I rev the engine with the clutch in while in first. I just assumed it was just the way the gear was.

Are you running Dunlops that are cupped?

1st through 3rd gears are straight cut right? Straight cut gears tend to whine.

Mine hand a similar whining sound when I put in gear for a few hundred miles. Until I found it and fixed it. The noise was the rusty needle bearing in the clutch basket. I replaced the clutch basket.

Is it hard to fix? Should I be worried about mine?

its not that hard. I road mine with the whine for 500 miles with no problems. I just got paranoid. I found the source and fixed it. No whine. I think the rust came from too much Primary peanut butter from riding in the rain.

You just need some special tools.

I made a clutch puller out of a $2 oil filter wrench and jammed a 1/2 inch open ended wrench instead of the locking tool.

Mine's done it since day one (15k miles when I bought it). I got 40k now. I can't recall if my last Uly did it.

I've got a clutch puller if you need it.

I will put it on the list of things to take care of eventually once I get a second form of transport. Perhaps I should take advantage and do a dry slipper clutch with open primary? : D

and you can do the 9 gearing like I tried to do.

But make sure you get buell parts, not whack used sportster junk from ebay that wont fit. : (

Nah, if anything I am going taller with the gearing. One of the Aussie sponsors has a kit for it. 2500rpm at 60 sounds awesome and might net me a few more MPG.

Electra,
I am running syncs; however, the rear is lower and needs to be changed soon.

Just picked it up from Hal's this morning...new ECM, no more detonation. Well, at least it is much harder to get it to happen. I had them take a look at what might be causing the whine and was told its normal. They also checked the bearings and said they were good yet as well.

I'll take a look at the idler pulley to make sure it is still there.

Baker, can you elaborate? Do you have the part number of the needle bearing? Or do you have to replace the entire clutch assembly?

The trannys all tend to whine a little, but both of my ulys developed a very noticble whine that occurs as the engine is spooling down when you pull in the clutch to come to a stop.

The first uly did it after I lost a screw on the transmission inspection cover and I rode it (unaware) of the fact it was leaking transmission oil for a while. It made it for over 10k miles after that, so apparently it didn't do anything fatal to the transmission.

The second uly just started and I'm trying to figure out why. I just changed the fluid and it had the water puke in it from my trip to homecoming in the rain. If I can make it stop by replacing a bearing, I'd like to do that.
