I have been riding my '06 Uly for 2 years (17,000 miles) and just before the warranty expired the rear shock started leaking. Buell replaced it but now I am hyper aware of my shock... man does it get hot! The fan blows right on it... no wonder the first failed so soon... I don't remember it being THIS hot however... is there supposed to be some kind of shroud to protect it? There should be!

1, How do you know if your shock issue was due to heat?

There have been around 100,000 Buell XB models built, and I have read of only a few failures, non of them due to heat as far as I know.

I read all the time about shock issues with the tubers, yet they don't have a fan and aren't exposed to heat from the engine.

The tuber failures are seemingly most attributed to the engine vibes being applied laterally to the axis of the shock's movement.

i would think that the only problem that a super hot shock might have is the seal getting soft with heat and sucking up crap from the back wheel.
damaging the seal.
causing a leak.
smoking the shock.

they do make boots for shocks on ATV's that might keep some of the road off yer shock
