This is not my week. Does anyone else have this happening in a 6-inch section of their belt? The rest of the belt is not frayed at all.I read some older posts and they mentioned the guard rubbing and causing this. The only question I have is....can I ride the rest of the summer like this? i.e. is this 90% cosmetic and doesn't really affect the strength of the belt?Other question....I wonder if a dealer will give me the ole' "oh, she's got another 10k on her, they all do that", type of spiel.

Mines a little fuzzy in one section also. I don't worry about it.

Should we trim them up? I don't want my belt to look "unkept" by it's bushiness.

Take a new razor blade, without cutting into the rubber, shave your bushiness(if it will cut those fibers), and black it out with a sharpie.

I have not seen one do that, but I do live in an isolated little world of my own.

Mine did that, rode it another 15k miles before it eventually snapped in a wheelie.

Froggy,

Did it snap at the fuzzy section or somewhere else?

Can you poste a more "global" shot showing the belt, the fraying and the relationship to the guards?

I'm watching this closely . . . but am on "double super probation" after helping an owner who bought a Buell and couldn't ride it for 9 weeks. . . . so I am back in my "spectator in the penalty box" phase.

Now I gotta at least go ride the tractor around the yard until I can stop grinning!

Court,
I emailed you. Shoot me your email and I'll send you the whole jpeg. It's PG-13 though, so beware.

Now that's a crime, they should be ashamed... who else'll help a rider who can't ride his new bike for 9 weeks, the dealer?

So here is my theory. The threads running through the belt are fed from a spool as the belt is created. I assume that the belts start as a wider product and are narrowed by a cutter of some sort. The strands that you see are most likely running at a slight angle and not exactly in line with the belt. Since the strands are never going to be joined end to end like a rubber band you are seeing the last few inches of a strand running at a 5 to 10 degree angle to the belt. I now this because I used to work on a BOCS machine (bi oriented continuous strand).

I agree.

It was a simple case where a dealer had REALLY screwed up. Guy bought a brand new spanking bike and saw it like 3 days of the first 3 months he owned it.

I intervened. It was quickly resolved. But unfortunately some heads rolled for essentially nothing more than, after 2 months, getting two parties within Harley-Davidson in touch with each other so that the issues could be resolved within hours. They HATE outside help.

My wife is already started the planning for my Buell Retirement Party. Frankly, it's getting on time . . .
