Well yesterday I lost my headlights of course at night. I have the HIDs and they are realayed. Relays are working and there is 14v when running. My question is how do I test the ballasts and bulbs? I didn't have time last night to dive in but did check the relays and voltage. Thanks.

Did you lose both of them? If so I would look at the power source. Can you give a quick description of how they are wired and what kind/brand the HID's are?

I have the VVME lights that were on a post on here. I have a dedicated wire(fused) from battery going to flyscreen to a distribution block. Voltmeter is also attached to said block and shows 14v running. From there it goes to the relay then to the ballast. Both are out and I can hear and feel the relays clicking over. They have worked perfect for 800+ miles. I will be doing some dissasembly tonight hopefully.

How did you ground the ballasts?

The cases themselves? I didn't. The negative goes to the ground bolt on the lower triple.

You have a relay for each ballast? Is there power coming from the 87-terminal on each?

The clicking you hear is the switching in the relay but that doesn't mean the 30/87 circuit is alive (power to ballast).

If you're not getting power from the 87's when the relays activate then I'd look upstream to where you've taken it from your dedicated battery lead.

If that checks out then I suspect the ground (to the steering head?) from the ballasts. I've had numerous problems there with my bike.

Can you try bypassing the relay and feeding off the stock wires? I ended up doing that as a roadside repair because my soldering skills sucked and my feed for the relay broke.

That will be my first thing to try tonight when I have time finally to start digging in. Thanks for all the ideas. Are the ballasts themselves supposed to be grounded? I didn't see anything about that in the instructions.

No they don't need grounding, but for both to go at the same time sure points to a common wire, + or - breaking off.

Well turns out that I only crimped one side of the buttsplice on the ground wire. So the - wires from the ballasts where flopping inside the splice and only being held in there by the black tape I wrapped it with to help keep water out. So the moral of the story is double check your work especially when you are working real late. Was having so many issues with the diodes on the relays I forgot to crimp that down. Explains the intermittent nature of the lights not working this week. Thank you all for your help.
