I am looking into getting some type of Chatterbox device so my fiance and I can talk while on road trips. I would also like to be able to listen to music. I have a couple questions. I generally wear earplugs while riding. Does anyone know if the flat speakers that come with a lot of the bike com devices are powerful enough to be heard through earplugs. And are the blue tooth devices worth the extra dough? I am up for any suggestions as I have never used any device like these before. What is everyone else using?

I have a StarCom intercom unit built into my tank bag. StarCom sells a headset that has a microphone and a jack to plug your earbuds into. You then plug your music/GPS/cell phone/FRS/CB into the StarCom unit. You can find all you need to know about configuring the unit here: http://www.starcom1.com/

I have the Cardo Scala Rider Q2 multiset that I use with my wife. She is on her own bike. I have a lightning - so wind protection is minimal.
I use it with earplugs and an aftermarket pipe which is quite loud.
The bike to bike com is crystal clear even at speeds up to 70 mph, after that the wind makes it a little harder to hear.
I link it via bluetooth to my cell phone and it is absolutely great.
Cruising along, I can answer phone calls and the person on the other end doesn't even know I'm on my bike.
The battery power is fantastic and will easily last a 12 hour day of riding.

If you are going to get this, make sure that you get the Q2 multiset as it has a stereo headphone jack that allows you to plug in your ipod or whatever. It is not available on the individual units, only the multiset. You can listen through bluetooth, but it is not A2DP meaning that it will not be stereo. It has an FM tuner which is stereo and the headphone jack is stereo. I have it turned up to max with my earplugs in and it is at comfortable volume.

This unit has made trips with my wife so much better. We happily chat and talk about stopping, getting gas etc. She loves it too.

I am not going to reccomend a system except to say go wireless. You will not regret not having to mess with connections everytime you get on and off the bike. I have a Scala Teamset which worked fine for about three years. Recently it has begun to give me problems however. I think the rechargable battery has give up the ghost.

Collette makes one of if not the best motorcycle or snowmobile communicators. They are an extreemly high quality well designed unit that works flawlessly. Bluetooth enabled and clear voice at 100mph. Interfaces with Zumo, cell, mp3, sat radio ect and has full stereo sound. 2 Mile range. 3 Year warranty parts and labour. Check the site for specials on the previous models.

I use Autocom. Can connect CB or FMRS radio, with PTT button or vox triggered mic. Unit has a cable that plugs ear buds into so I use eutocis(sp) that give excellent sound quality even at 95MPH. Also have Radar detector (escort, which also has built in audible voltage drop alarm), XM radio and GPS through system. I am also able to hook up Ipod if I so chose but have not found a need to yet. Radar detector cuts off all other incoming sources, then in order of priorty Bike to Bike then Passanger to Rider. Used with passanger and also others (up to 4 other bikes)that I ride with use Autocom and Cobra CB radios. We use CB's because sometimes we are on long distance rides and it is good to get traffic/safety/detour info from truckers if we are stuck unfortunatly on open hiway. Side note fortunatly the fellows I ride with are not chatsters so we do not spend a great deal of time chatting other than essentials on the CB's. We all have been hapy with product. The unit also has a powered input for cell phone, but since I have reached my present age and no longer subscribe to the addage "If you cannot be polite at least be vague" no one ever calls me so I have no use for cell phone reception while riding the bike.

Autocom- I have used it it for many years and the race team has used it for over 3 years.
In ear speakers for the racing are best. Pretty cool talking to a racer on the banking at Daytona : )

Frank,
how do you like the blueant? I'm thinking of getting a couple of those for riding dirt bikes with my kid (for bike to bike com).

Bosh, they work well but I needed to cut down the wind noise in my helmet. I have not tried it with my full face yet.

Sounds good. Wind noise probably wouldn't bee to much of an issue in the dirt.
Thanks.

I use the Blueant. Works well for the wife and me up to about 65 mph. Plus the price now has come down to around $110.

Thanks everyone for the comments and suggestions.
I decided to purchase the Chatterbox XBI2. They came in today and it was a quick install on the helmets. When my fiance got home we took them out for a run. We both have Buells with stock exhausts, Shoei Rf1000 helmets, and both wear earplugs. These things worked flawlessly up to 75mph and probably beyond, but only tested to 75. Perfect clarity on the side roads and slightly muffled on the highway above 60mph due to wind noise. I have yet to couple a bluetooth device to them but I imagine they will work as advertised. I am very impressed with these units as I read mixed reviews of them online. If anyone has any questions let me know.

Does anyone use N-Com? My buddy and I both have Nolan helmets and have been thinking about the N-Com but would like some reviews first...
