In talking to many different Uly owners I know, it seems that 37-43mpg is the average for this area. This is very puzzling to me since Buell's claimed mileage is 51-64mpg. In talking to the local shop they don't seem to have any ideas how to improve mileage. I'm wondering if different geographic areas could effect the fuel mileage that much. I thought I would turn to the bad weather world and see what information is out there. |

I've gotten 51 mpg on one tank only. That was riding two up at a moderate pace (read: speed limit to five over). I usually get 40-45. |

3200 miles on my '08 XT and average 40mpg. Got 35mpg on the last tank, but was riding it hard around town and idling in construction traffic. 55+ mpg is a dream except for those that don't like the feel of this torque monster. If you like the low growl as you accelerate, don't expect anything much over 40mpg. |

If you read the footnote on Buell.com, the claimed fuel economy numbers are from EPA testing. If you ride the exact same as the EPA in the exact same conditions, you will get the exact same numbers. I can beat the EPA claims on any vehicle by a minimum of 15% no problem. |

It's the XT's low fender, tall screen and lighter wheels causing the poor fuel economy. NUTS |

On my 06, I'm getting between 43mpg to 46mpg. That's riding 50 miles hwy, with 10 city miles per work day. Hwy speeds are 65-80mph. City speeds are 20-35mph. At nearly every "round-about" or some call them "circles" I get on it pretty hard. (round about's or circles are the traffic solution for stop signs or lights in my city) Any vehicle that I've ever owned that has any power to it, I have to use it. Always with a grin on my face... |

33.25 mpg from the tank I refilled this morning. I commute on the XT daily, twelve miles each way. And though the route is almost exactly six miles of surface streets and six of freeway, time-wise it translates to fifteen minutes in light-to-light and five on the superslab. Looking forward to seeing what long-distance highway riding does for the mileage this summer. |

The EPA standards haven't changed since, "when ever" they were in acted. Average speed is 45 mph around a town with two stop signs!! |

09 XT - getting 45-50 on the road, mountain riding up and down, fair amount of head wind, Ortlieb saddlebags, tour pack top case and long duffle over the seat. About 43 mpg in town only. Bike now has 3,200 miles on it and the break out of 34 mpg came at 2k miles. |

Ahh, but they change on a regular basis. They just changed the testing standards for MY2008 vehicles. http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/ratings2008.shtml |

Still breaking in my new leftover '08 ULY and got 42mpg on the last tank. About 360 miles into break-in. I'm satisfied! Not babying it either, ask Froggy. Maybe it was water injection from Sundays rain ride?? |

And there are no standards for motorcycle ratings. The typical solution that most manufacturers are using is to use the FTP numbers to calculate mileage based off tail pipe emissions numbers on a dynamometer. I believe the current auto standard requires them to undergo 4 more test to provide the numbers shown on window stickers. As to what Buell actually uses, I'm not sure, and all they really indicate is "Based on tests conducted under lab conditions per U.S. E.P.A. test procedures." I for one am not really all that concerned about it, and definitely not concerned enough to try my patience at hypermiling. |

I think most of us agree that we are not totally disappointed with 43mpg either. Just like anything, all we can do is compare to others experience and that is the disappointing part. All I have heard about while riding my 2004 XB12s was the guys on the 2006 XB12x's getting 55-60mpg! Then you see the '08 xt's come along with a similar EPA rating and it would be natural to expect to get at lest 50mpg. That is not even wishful thinking, it's expected. So no, we are not disappointed with 43mpg, but it's horrible compared to what we expected. Even my dealer laughs when anyone brings up the "trivial matter" of mileage. I'm making a bigger stink over it not being what we expected, not that it's bad! I will keep on driving and loving the bike. And ignore the fact the we were truly mislead. Is it possible that Buell put the EPA ratings of the previous years bikes on the sticker since everyone but the '08-'09 owners experienced such great mileage that they expected it themselves? Keep the rubber down and at an extreme angle. |

If ride you 55 and use a real gas with no ethanol you may get 55 60 mpg. My last tank was 45 on a 06 X. |

Ethanol and altitude seem to make the biggest difference in gas mileage for me. Around SE Minnesota and SW Wisconsin I get 40 to 45 mpg. On one trip out west into the Rockies and then north I was getting 50 to 57+ mpg. I have seen the same mpg pattern in other bikes as well. |
