I've read about the 77 connector, and VR problems. I seem to recall alternator issues as well, but a search didn't turn up what I was looking for:

My 2007, with 32,000 miles, and a 2 month old battery, stopped charging yesterday.
Luckily, I was not too far from home, and was able to just make it.
I WAS planning to go to NC for the holiday weekend, but that plan is history now.
Hand-held voltmeter showed 10 volts when I got home, so I put in the original battery that was showing 12 volts. Started up, but showed only 12.1 volts at 4-5000 RPM.

I assume it's the alternator, rather than the VR, but will have it checked since I only have a couple weeks left on my warranty.

Closest dealer is now 90 miles away, so it's loaded up in the van for the trip tomorrow. Lots of HD dealers in South Florida, but too many have dropped Buell.

Did you check the 77 connector? That could easily cause these symptoms and it's a relatively easy fix (WAY easier than a 180 mile round trip to the dealer). Complete directions here:

If it's not the 77 connector, it's likely the stator or the VR, and either of those would be worth letting the dealer fix it.

I did check 4 connectors, and added dielectric grease to each one, but when I did it, I mistakenly thought the 77 connector was a 3 pronger. I think the only one I didn't check was probably the one I should have checked.

It's under warranty, get it to the dealer and if it's the 77 connector then let them upgrade it. Always good to have things documented by the dealer in case you have problems in the future on the same thing. Buell customer service helped me because of that reason.

I recently changed out my VR. Took about an hour and was very easy. Get the service manual and trouble-shoot the charging system. There are a whole bunch of tests as well as a flow chart to direct you. If it's the stator or rotor, and you're not mechanically inclined, than you may want to take it to a dealer or offer a 6-pack of the good stuff to a fellow member on here to come by and give you a hand. The VR regulator is just: remove sprocket cover, loosen chin fairing, disconnect connectors 77 and 46(i think?), unscrew VR, remove VR, reverse process to install new VR. Very simple. Hardest part will be crimping the new connector that the VR comes with now, and that's still easy. You can even solder or get some water-tight crimps from Home Depot.

Really though, get the service manual. You can pick it up for $50. When my VR fried (my fault...long story...), I was very close to taking it to a dealer. After I bought the service manual and discovered that the VR needed changing, that saved me a whole bunch of coin in over-priced dealer parts and hours of labor in diagnosis and repair.

Buell must have taken these failures on board, As I have had my front pulley cover off and the 77 connector is no longer there on the 09 model, XBXT at least. The wires and connectors are all up the left side under the air intake scoop.
So hopefully I wont be having mine fail!

Touch wood ; )

The charging system on the 08+ models is completely different. In fact just about everything electrical is different.

Hey Froggy, Does this mean the 77 connector is gone on the 08 XT? I haven't checked mine, (yet). I hope I don't need to. I've been checkin the bike over. I'm planning on coming down to the homecoming in a few weeks, and also going to the racers at Elk lake later.

Yes, there is no 77 connector on 08-up XB's.

Last night when I got home from work, I checked the connectors again. Turns out that I had already checked and greased the 77 connector - it was the 46 that I hadn't done. They all checked good, all reset with dielectric grease.

Dropped it off this am, after my 2 hour drive to the now closest dealer.

The 77 connector stills shows up on the wiring diagram for the 08's.

I stand corrected. Possibly it's a different plug that's less-susceptible to the problem? Maybe the same one that comes in the repair kit?

Florida_lime- Keep your fingers crossed. Maybe they'll get it fixed in ample time for you to go to NC this weekend.

I doubt it -- I'm having them also look at a possible rear rocker box gasket leak - the 3rd time it will have been done.

But I can hope !

The VR connector is on the left side below the scoop. Not as vunerable to water I guess....
